Interesting question. I’d say “No.” I’d “label” him as orthodox, Protestant, German, Lutheran, Pietist. The evangelical movement is more or less the Reformed side of the Reformation than the Lutheran side. (Though the German Lutherans themselves call themselves “evangelisch” in German.) What about you? Would you say Bonhoeffer is an evangelical? Added question: If Bonhoeffer were alive, which denomination would he be a part of?  Eric Metaxas, author of a wonderful new biography of Bonhoeffer (Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy... Read more

I’ve been listening to Josh Fox’s new album, Radiant, and especially to track 2: Mighty is Our God. It puts into music and lyrics the essence of Psalm 19. (iTunes link.) The song begins with an almost Robin Mark-beat and then soars into the sort of praise we find in Psalm 19 — straightforward praise and declaration of the goodness of God. It moves, as does Psalm 19, from the heavens that declare the glory of God and then to... Read more

James Emery White’s , in his new book ( Christ Among the Dragons: Finding Our Way Through Cultural Challenges), zeroes in the issue of civility. We looked at one treatment of the theme Wednesday and today we look at a second one: polarizations within the church. What are you doing to reduce polarizations of the One Church in your community? What do you think are the signs that a church is divisive? one that is unifying? These polarizations divide the Church. He... Read more

C. Michael Patton has a post meandering through things he used to believe. But he isn’t so sure anymore. Like you are either 100% correct in theology or wrong. Or all sins are equal in God’s sight. The unbeliever’s skepticism is always unfounded. What about you? What are some things you used to think were so important but now think are wrong-headed or up-for-grabs? Read more

We close out Psalm 19 today, and we recall that it had two sections — one that saw creation praising God and one that sees the human praising God for his Word. The “word” of creation has a silent praise; the Word of the Lord has a verbal praise from God’s people, the People of his Torah. I want to urge you to consider listening to Josh Fox, Radiant, and especially to track 2: Mighty is Our God. It puts... Read more

I recently received a copy of John F. Haught‘s new book Making Sense of Evolution: Darwin, God, and the Drama of Life. Haught is a Senior Fellow in Science and Religion at Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University and Professor of Theology Emeritus. He testified at the Dover trial on Intelligent Design back in 2005. His book opens some interesting topics for discussion and is certainly worth a few posts. Chapters four and five deal with a discussion of descent and... Read more

As I mentioned Monday afternoon, I’ve got a new book sitting here that will be a dynamic book to read and blog about. It’s one of the most encouraging and myth-busting books of the last two decades. The book is by Bradley R.E. Wright, and he’s a professor at the University of Connecticut where he teaches sociology.  Wright’s book is called: Christians Are Hate-Filled Hypocrites…and Other Lies You’ve Been Told: A Sociologist Shatters Myths From the Secular and Christian Media... Read more

The Church in America is changing, and Origins is at the forefront. Origins is a worldwide network of leaders who follow Jesus thriving on the diversity and creativity growing in the Church.  It’s an externally-focused network of creatives, business leaders, activists, educators, and leaders that exist to love humanity and serve the mission of Jesus. If you want to understand and experience the evolving face of Christianity, one that represents the diversity, passion, and creativity found in the ways of... Read more

We are fortunate here at the Jesus Creed blog to have so many readers and commenters. One of whom is “T” and he is a lawyer. Here are his reflections on the SCOTUS ruling on the California case, and I hope we can have a good conversation about this.  Should Christian organizations be protected by the Law so they can include in their groups only those who affirm their guidelines? What a field day for the heat. Monday, the Supreme... Read more
