I begin today a series on Psalms, which promises to be a long, long series. One a day for four days a week would take almost 40 weeks, and I won’t get close to one psalm a day. One psalm a week would take three years, and I won’t take that long. So, hang on and join us in the middle of the day for some reflection on the Psalms. Our focus will be on the “God of the Psalms.”... Read more
I’m really enjoying the new book, The Loser Letters , by Mary Eberstadt. It’s fiction; it’s satire; it’s the attempt by a recent atheist convert to explain the problems of atheism to the upper level echelon of new atheists. It’s witty; it’s wickedly potent at points. Her second letter probes the Logic of the new atheists and finds its problems. The Brights, her satirical word for the new atheists, believe they are the more logical, at least more logical than the Dulls... Read more

One of the themes at the Wheaton gathering on Evangelicals and the Early Church was how hard it is to get a grip on the early church, and it was said plenty of times that it takes long hours and hard work. The ordinary pastor sitting there had to be thinking, “That leaves me out.” Sure, to read all of the Pre- (or Ante-) Nicene and Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, at least in the Eerdmans edition, would consume the reading... Jeremy Berg, a youth pastor, has offered a good set of ideas on “calling” and “vocation”. Tell us what you think. We love to throw around the notion of career “calling” and “vocation,” both in the context of Christian ministry and secular careers. I believe we’ve become sloppy in our concept and understanding of “calling.” What we do agree on is the importance of seeking to live out our individual sense of calling in order to have a life that... The Triumphal Entry 11:1 Now as they approached Jerusalem, near Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 11:2 and said to them, “Go to the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 11:3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here soon.'” 11:4 So they went... Read more
Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.... From our neck of the woods… To say the kids got a hands-on lesson in charity would be an understatement. In classic bucket-brigade style Friday morning, nearly 1,300 Wauconda High School students passed more than 8,000 food items along a half-mile route from the high school to the Wauconda-Island Lake Food Pantry on Main Street. Enduring a biting windchill and temperatures in the lower 30s, the kids tossed, handed and sometimes dropped thousands of bags along the way. Student Council... Read more
