Stephen C. Meyer has published a (very long, but readable) book, Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design, outlining his argument in favor of intelligent design. Chapter 15 is where we finally get to the point. The groundwork has been laid, and Meyer explains why he thinks that intelligent design is the best explanation for the origin of life – and more specifically, the origin of the specified information required for life. Today we will look... Read more

John Walton’s new book on Genesis (The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate ), which essentially argues that Genesis 1 is about the function of materials instead of the construction or creation of materials, was blogged about on this blog at length. The book generated lots of conversation and learning. Not all are in agreement with John, and one of his stronger critics is Vern Poythress. The review by Poythress, in World Magazine, was critical... Read more

Chris Hall, in Worshiping With the Church Fathers , examines the topic of prayer in the fathers and he has several chps because the topic of prayer was so central to the worship of the early fathers. Proba, a woman, wrote a letter to Augustine asking his advice on prayer to which he responded in a letter now famous in those who study prayer. One of Augustine’s points was that she, a wealthy woman, relied too much on what she owned... Read more

One of our friends, Mark Oestreicher, was for years a leader at Youth Specialties, and he followed the legendary Mike Yaconelli. Well, Marko has been pondering for a good while now “what’s next?” in his youth ministry life, and there were leaks and rumors and whispers behind closed doors, but it’s now official: He’s becoming a youth ministry coach. I’ve clipped two paragraphs or so: Youth Ministry Coaching ProgramA yearlong 360 coaching cohort, focusing on whole-life development and youth ministry... Read more

Yesterday: From Brian McLaren’s blog: Quiz:When I am presented with a new idea or proposal, my first question is more likely to be …___A. Is it acceptable to my religious/ideological community or belief system?___B. Is it possibly true, valuable, and worth exploring? If you chose A, you’re probably a fundamentalist, and probably shouldn’t read my new book because it will only get you in trouble. If you do decide to read it, don’t let your fundamentalist friends know. Hide the book in... Read more

Now on to Jerusalem (replica to your left of the old ancient core), which begins a long but final set of episodes in Acts: Paul gets there, suspicion is aroused, he’s taken into custody, and eventually ends up in prison in Rome — but undeterred in his gospel preaching. The singular issue concerns Paul’s observance of Torah and whether or not his churches are Torah-observant. Notice these words, and I am suggesting these words shed light on what today is... Read more

On homeschooling… What do you think of the homeschooling movement in the USA? The numbers are more significant than you might think (see below after the jump). My father was a public school teacher; Kris’ father was a public school teacher; we have other family members who are public school teachers; we have uncles and aunts who are public school teachers. We’re for public education. Many parents are not. What are the major reasons why parents choose to homeschool? Is... Read more

I was pushed a bit Monday to weigh in on the post about Christians, Sports, and Compromise. I have to confess that it was hard for me to comprehend an author like Hoffman spending most of his life in sports and coming down so hard on sports — and I don’t want to deny Hoffman’s nuances all over the place. Having said that, here’s my take: First, sports are a game. As such, there are rules for how that game... Read more

We are honored to have been invited to speak at the 2010 Synergy Conference in Orlando Florida. The conference will be March 5-7, and will begin our Spring Break … and I can’t think of a better way to begin Spring Break than being with folks like … Michelle Loyd-Paige Susan Isaacs and Carolyn Custis James The theme this year will be on how conflict shapes and reshapes our stories and how those conflicts shape leaders. Think about joining us... Read more
