Along with Alan Hauser (Appalachian State University) and Jonathan Klawans (Boston University), I am co-editor of the journal Currents in Biblical Research. This journal can be read to keep up with “what’s going on?” in Old Testament studies, Judaism studies, and New Testament studies. The publisher just offered to us a 30% discount by contacting “Customer Service Department” at this email address (and mention the offer from this blog). The amazing thing about this journal is that one can acquire... Read more

Lynn Cohick’s new book, Women in the World of the Earliest Christians: Illuminating Ancient Ways of Life , will become the standard for all study of the social location of women in the earliest Christian churches. This is an exceptional book and it will replace Ben Witherington’s (now) twenty-some year old study. We’ve got lots of exegesis of biblical texts but we don’t have enough social description of what women did in the ancient world so that we can approach... Read more

I have followed the reports out of Copenhagen about global climate changes, but am not hearing that much chat among bloggers … I ran through all my blogs late last week and don’t recall seeing one post on Copenhagen.  What do you think? Do you think we are facing an unprecedented crisis? Do you think the climate shifts are man-made or simply the cycles of nature?  Here’s a clip from an article in the Washington Post: In announcing the deal,... Read more

Do Something Now from Children’s HopeChest on Vimeo. I hope you can join us in helping kids in Swaziland. We want to focus the Jesus Creed blog’s concern on a CarePoint called Mabanteneni. We are committing funds to HopeChest, an organization designed by Tom Davis (pictured), and they will process our gifts and provide funds and services for Mabanteneni and the children there.  But this is more than giving money for food. We want to help build a sustainable infrastructure... Read more

I read in the NYTimes this morning that the younger generation, 20s and 30s, is now wearing more formal clothing to work and their dress contrasts ever more sharply with the 40s and 50s. Are you seeing this? Do you see a change in dress codes? Do you have any views on dress codes at the workplace? Here’s a clip from the newspaper article: “The older generation, say 45-plus, look upon success as being able to dress down,” said Marshal... Read more

Merry Christmas from Chicago!   Best story I read this week. “Hi, I’m sorry to bother you,” she wrote to Chris, “but if you are the Chris Astle I was looking for then I just want to thank you. You and Ms. Yanich found me on someone’s doorstep when I was an infant. I don’t really know what else to say, but thank you. If I’ve gotten the wrong person then I apologize! -Mia” Christmas with Tom Davis (and Chuck Smith... Read more

RJS, who got the right book (if not the only motive). I needed a new copy of Dickens, and I needed one with a bigger font — my old Oxford edition had too small of a font. So I got this beautiful edition produced by A.A. Knopf.   Read more
