Last week I mentioned that we want to begin doing book reviews on this blog on Saturday afternoons. Our vision for this is for “you” to write these. We hope enough folks write reviews that we can post one weekly.  So, what to do? Write me, tell me you want to write a Review and tell me what book you want to do. In some cases I can get a Review Copy, but that should not be expected. We want... Read more

David Brooks, in the NYTimes, on being emotionally educated by Bruce Springsteen: By DAVID BROOKS Like many of you, I went to elementary school, high school and college. I took such and such classes, earned such and such grades, and amassed such and such degrees. But on the night of Feb. 2, 1975, I turned on WMMR in Philadelphia and became mesmerized by a concert the radio station was broadcasting. The concert was by a group I’d never heard of... Read more

Now is the time to give thanks. O merciful Creator, your hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of every living creature:  Make us always thankful for your loving providence;  and grant that we, remembering the account that we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of your good gifts;  Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.  We turn toward Advent now, and Christine... Read more

From Philippi, Paul and Silas head to Thessalonica (agora to the left) where the same story unfolds. Sabbath, three weeks in a row. Explaining from Scripture the Story of Jesus: “explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and to rise from the dead, saying, “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.” Paul’s gospel is the Story of Jesus as the one who lived, suffered and died — and that is the Jewish/Israelite Story of the... Read more

Let’s begin today with a question: How do we justify abolition of slavery when the Bible contains it and in some ways justifies it? How do you deal with that question? The big questions in this series of posts have been these: How do we move beyond the Bible? Should we? Better yet: Since we have to, how do we move beyond the Bible into our world but do this biblically?  This is the concern of Zondervan’s new Counterpoint book edited by... Read more

The Biologos Foundation ran an invitation only workshop earlier this month on the issues of science and faith – evangelical faith. They are posting a number of the papers considered over the next several weeks both on the Biologos site and for consideration on the blog Science and the Sacred. I will interact with much of this material and open it for discussion here. (We already had a fine discussion of Bruce Waltke’s white paper: One, Two). Yesterday they posted... Read more
