I can’t possibly discuss every book I’d even like to discuss at length on this blog, let alone books I get that deserve to be mentioned. I would need four blogs to get all this accomplished.  Yet, I’ve been frustrated about this for a long time, and never landed on anything that works so I want to start a column I will call “Book Comments” that mentions some really good books, usually of an academic level fit mostly for pastors... Read more

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Read more

Chicago’s Marathon! I’m with Dan Reid on the multiple value of multiview books (even if I’ve been asked a few times to contribute to such volumes and always declined). Hipsters and sports? Ed Dobson’s story. Opening from LaVonne Neff: “For more than sixty years American presidents... Read more

Free book offer at bottom of this post! Pastors need to hear from fellow pastors. There’s a place for pastors listening to biblical experts — when they study the Bible. There’s a place for pastors listening to theologians — when they need to study theology. But there’s a place where only a pastor can speak to another pastor. I’ve been there, and I have to sit back and listen and sometimes I can’t even enter into the conversation because it’s... Read more

At times I sense Dean Nelson could be our generation’s male Anne Lamott. He offers to us a disarming honesty along with an honest quest for God, but there’s nothing romantic, idealistic or utopian. He offers the quest for placidity, not its secret potion. He finds God in plain sight, but his discoveries are less overt than they are storied instances… really well done. What role does “baptism” play in your spiritual life? Tell the truth: is it important or... Read more

Ten years ago, Kris and I subscribed to three newspapers — Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald, and the local Pioneer Press publication. Today we subscribe to no newspapers … we get our mail from: Internet, primarily CNN, MSNBC, NYTimes, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, etc. We get these news sources now through our iPhones — mostly through “apps.” We watch TV for the news in the evening, dipping into “both sides”: CNN and FoxNews. But others get news through: Twitter and Facebook... Read more

The gospel is moving in all directions: the folks in Jerusalem are embracing it; Jews in other cities embrace it; Gentiles begin embracing it; and the whole movement looks like the work of God to save through Messiah Jesus, the Lord of all. Alongside this work is the work of prophets, early messianic prophets: 11:27 At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 11:28 One of them, named Agabus, got up and predicted by the Spirit that a severe famine... Read more

We’ve had extensive conversations on this blog on the issue of women in ministry. The topic comprises the last third of Scot’s book The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible , and is at the root of many of the contemporary conflicts within our church, including those over tribal translations.  I generally stay on the periphery of these discussion because they always leave me feeling sick – and just a little dirty. But this is an issue that... Read more
