I am so grateful Chris Folmsbee is writing this weekly column for us about youth ministry. We need more focus on the next generation… so here goes… Let’s hear your response. I’ve found a new hobby.  I have found absolute delight in digging up older books on youth ministry – books from the 70’s and 80’s.  Much of what I find I purchase for a couple of bucks from some obscure website and they’re usually shipped from places in the... Read more

This is a two-part series by Logan Paul Gage, of the Discovery Institute, about Intelligent Design. We posted part one last week — this is part two, and today’s post covers two themes: God and beauty. Intelligent design and the deity In the predominant narrative, Charles Darwin was a humble scientist who proposed a strictly scientific theory.  Upon publication of The Origin of Species in 1859, religious folks like Bishop Wilberforce voiced theological objections to it; and thus began the... Read more

One of the stickiest points in all of this new perspective vs. old perspective discussion is what to make of Romans 2:1-16, and Wright makes it clear that he thinks Paul means exactly what he says (Justification: God’s Plan & Paul’s Vision,). [I posted the text at the bottom of this post.] First, he says this is no charade — no pretending someone can be justified by works so we can set them up for the hammer in chp. 3.... Read more

I don’t think prayer is mechanical. That is, I don’t think if we “do” things right — as the right way, use the right formulae, etc — that we will get what we want. But James makes a mechanical point about prayer that we need to think about. Notice these words from James 4:1-3: What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle You within you?want something but don’t get it. You kill and... Read more

Here’s the transcript of Obama’s wide-ranging and peace-seeking speech in Cairo about tensions in the world. The Obama theme is clear: yes, we disagree on many important items; but let us build a better future on the basis of our common interests and our commitment to peace. Let us stand on our agreements without ignoring our differences. What do you think of his speech? Read more

In volume one of Essentials of Evangelical Theology (2 Volumes in 1), Donald Bloesch has a chapter entitled The Primacy of Scripture and a section in his chapter on Total Depravity dealing with The Story of the Fall. We have been discussing both of these issues – and as Bloesch  takes a  rather conservative reformed evangelical stance over all, it is worth considering what he has to say. (HT dopderbeck who directed me back to this book I’ve had on... Read more

Russell Moore is the dean of the School of Theology and senior VP at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He tells his story, personal and theological, of adopting two Russian children in his new book, Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families & Churches. I come at this from a different angle: Kris and I have never adopted any children, so I cannot speak from experience at all. So, I’m all ears when Russ Moore talks about adoption.... Read more

The good folks at North Park University are drafting a list of values behind our @npu social-media presence and I’m hoping those who have experienced North Park (and the Covenant) can weigh in for us. What attributes do you think are best to put into higher education social media? What terms best depict what North Park has to offer? Read more
