Can someone explain why so many listen to and follow Rush Limbaugh? Kris and I were listening to his speech (“address to the nation”) a bit last night and … well… I thought I’d see what you folks are thinking. (Keep it clean.) Read more

The Catholic authorities say no. What about you? Is support of abortion grounds not to permit the eucharist? Q. When should a Catholic refrain from receiving holy Communion? A. In November 2006, the bishops of the United States issued a pastoral document entitled “Happy Are Those Who Are Called to His Supper” which addressed this question as follows: “In order to receive Holy Communion we must be in communion with God and with the Church. Mortal sin constitutes a rejection... Read more

Reversal is one of James’ convictions. He’s looking at and like his brother on this one too. What is reversal? That the present conditions are unjust; that the conditions are contrary to God’s design; that God will (soon?) step in to reverse things so that things will be put to rights. So that justice will flow through the land. So that the poor will not be oppressed and the oppressors will not oppress. “The Day is Coming” is the idea.... Read more

We begin today a new series. For now, we are calling it “Behind the Scenes.” We will have all kinds of discussions about this topic (below) and I won’t give any more away so here goes … a new series … and one I think will make a difference in the Church. There are a number of people in the church who qualify and are chosen for ministry. This happens in a variety of ways and we value these gifted... Read more

In a recent Out of Ur Blog, JI Packer weighed in on whether communion is open or not. Here are the first bits and I’m curious as to what you think. (The rest of his piece is at that link.) Do you believe that access to the Lord’s Table should be restricted, and if so, how does the church do that in a way that’s inoffensive? [I would add this: If you were the person distributing the bread or wine,... Read more

Many of us know about the high correlation between the faith of parents and the faith of teenagers. This was all sorted out and described by Christian Smith, in his book Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers . But I was reading another study the other day and came across something that is powerfully disturbing. What do you think? It comes from Jeffrey Arnett’s book Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the Late Teens through the... Read more

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Read more

Here is Chicago’s famous cauldron on a hazy sky night. There was an interesting series of responses at “On Faith” for the Washington Post about whether or not we should read the Bible, a concern of mine in The Blue Parakeet. Two of the more suggestive ones are by Jim Wallis and Susan Thistlethwaite. Milwaukee’s archbishop Timothy Dolan moves to NY to be archbishop there. G-Rated movies doing well. Tamara‘s surprise. My opinion: the only people I pay attention to... Read more
