Perhaps because I teach college students who frequently bring up what they will do for work when they leave college, perhaps because of some of my Anabaptist convictions, or perhaps because I love what “work” I do — and probably for each of these and more — a recent publication by Darrell Cosden, The Heavenly Good of Earthly Work, grabbed my attention. So, I want to do a series on this book and hope we can have a good conversation... Read more

One of my friends and a former colleague, Dan de Roulet, used to urge me to read some piece of fiction. He just knew I needed to do this, but deep inside I had to admit that I simply didn’t know how to read fiction. One day Dan suggested I read Flannery O’Connor’s great piece, “Parker’s Back,” and I was overwhelmed with her imagery and prose. So, I summed it all up for Dan with a short sentence or two... Read more

“Whoever does these commandments [of Jesus’] and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:19). The word “great” is here redefined by Jesus and it is defined by the Jesus Creed. |inline Read more

As some of you may know, we will be in Rustenburg South Africa for Pentecost with the Dutch Reformed Church. I will be speaking on Sunday morning and then each evening through Thursday (May 4-8) in a series on Pentecost. Alongside these Pentecost sermons, there will be plenty more opportunity for teaching. We are really looking forward to this and would like your prayers. We will be hosted by Attie Nel. On the second Sunday (May 11) we will be... Read more

The 4th chp in Roger Olson, Reformed and Always Reforming, is about the influence of postmodernity and postfoundationalism on postconservatives. The chps sweeps through many ideas with names and quotations, but I can only give a sampling here and I ask this question: |inline Read more

This is why the 4th part of 40 Days Living the Jesus Creed is called “The Jesus Creed becomes the Sermon on the Mount.” |inline Read more

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Read more

Praise God! …and many thanks for the prayers for my son, his girlfriend, and the many other students at this conference. The kids returned this afternoon and we have found out that my son and his girlfriend have made a commitment to give their all to following Jesus. While I am overjoyed with this information, I am also wary of the coming days…temptation, doubt, waning resolve. Therefore, I ask the community to please hold these kids up in prayer. The... Read more

On our iBook G4, when on the internet with Firefox, sometimes the down scroll arrow at the bottom right of the screen appears but more often it does not appear. All that appears most of the time is the upscroll arrow, not the downscroll arrow. Anyone know how to restore it? Read more

My friend and one of our seminary students, Chris Ridgeway, gave me a pound of a new coffee: Espresso Royale. I ground it just right on the first try — which is not common for me with a new bean — and, though I thought its taste at first a smidgeon sharp, I was wrong — delightful taste, great aroma, and a nice crema. |inline Read more
