Who believed in the immaculate conception? How early was it? Who didn’t believe in Mary’s immaculate conception and sinlessness? Again, some of this surprises many of us reared theologically in Protestantism. After this listing, I’ll draw my conclusions. No need to drag this out all week, as I don’t know enough about it to do that. |inline Read more

This is my last post on J. Frye’s wonderful book, Jesus the Pastor. I will do the final three chps today, and hope I’ve not said more than I should about this fine book. Chps 10 and 11 deal with the palpable presence of Jesus Christ in our lives and with the gifts of the Spirit. |inline Read more

God, Paul said in Romans 4:17, brought life out of the dead. What does this look like in real life? While the focus of 4:17 seems to be on Gentiles, that life-giving-faith is at the heart of the Jewish family because it is the faith of Abraham. |inline Read more

Kris and I drove to Freeport to see my father and both of our mothers on Saturday. My father recently had back surgery, my mother ankle surgery, and we were glad to see them moving around better. We went out for dinner, and afterward took this picture. Happy Father’s Day, dad. |inline Read more

Last week we looked at the perpetual virginity. While we didn’t agree on each point, we did behave ourselves and, speaking for myself, worked our way through some issues that we might not think of very often. In chps. 8 and 9 of J. Frye’s book we encounter one central theme — that of teaching. What is it? I suggest that if we believed what J. Frye says about what teaching is most of us would adjust what we do — as parents, as teachers, as ministers, as simple conversationalists. |inline Read more

Paul ties words together, and the bundle of words he creates exclude others. The words in his bundle are promise, faith, grace, and “all” and these words are tied together by “God” and “family.” God’s promise to Abraham, to make him a father of many nations (Gen. 17:5) — the big family, is by faith and therefore by grace. Therefore, it is not by Law and it not limited simply to those who are of the Law (Jews) — little... Read more

The BCP does not have a Father’s Day Prayer. So, our prayer this week is the Collect for this week. Lord, make me have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your loving-kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Read more
