I have become convinced that the book of Job is one of the most significant books of the Bible. As wisdom literature, this is a book designed to get the reader, whether in ancient Israel or today, to think deeply about God, about God’s sovereignty and rule over the world. God designed and rules the world in accord to his wisdom and in relationship with his creation. Since making this discovery I have come to realize that I am far... Read more

538 says No In a speech last week at an Alabama university, Donald Trump Jr. alternately mocked and ridiculed the culture of college campuses that teach students to “hate their religion” and “hate their country” — places where the moral teachings of the Bible are held up as “hate speech.” Trump Jr.’s impassioned condemnation of campus politics and college professors has become an increasingly common refrain in conservative politics, particularly among the conservative Christian wing. During the 2012 presidential campaign,... Read more
After the storm, by Kelly Edmiston who is a minister at the First Colony Church of Christ in Houston Texas. “The storm is over,” I heard the news anchor proudly announce with a great level of enthusiasm. Thousands of us had been glued to the television for hours on end trying to understand as the meteorologist explained Harvey’s projected path. We bit our fingernails anxiously as local city officials tried to estimate how many neighborhoods would be destroyed if the rain... Read more
One of the most significant books in the last two decades is Richard Bauckham’s Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony [=JE], and a new second edition only reveals how significant the book is. Speaking of eyewitness, when I was a PhD student at Nottingham, Jimmy Dunn and I drove together down to Cambridge for a Tyndale Lectureship. One of the lecturers was Richard Bauckham — of whom I had not heard but of whom Jimmy Dunn said he... Read more
Teaching the Church to Read the Bible Date: 10/24/17 Time: 10am CST Registration: http://goo.gl/7PTeB4 Description: Teaching your church how to read the Bible may be the most powerful way to equip a community to become like Jesus. It is so easy to tame the Bible to say what we want it to say. More often than not, we clip the wings of the Bible’s message instead of letting it soar and challenge us to climb to new heights with God.... Read more
By Jeremy Berg I [Jeremy] just listened to a great discussion about God’s glory, Reformed theology and the Nashville Statement on theTheology on Mission podcast with David Fitch and Geoff Holsclaw. The best takeaway line was “God’s glory is not just about God, nor about us, but God with us.” The conversation reminded me of a piece I wrote on the “God-centered vs. Man-centered” debate some time ago. Enjoy! ————— “The glory of God is man fully alive.” -St. Irenaeus Why do... Read more
A few years ago Tim Stafford published a book, the adam quest, where he interviewed eleven scientists who have wrestled with the mystery of human origins. After a brief introduction into his reasons for Tim jumps into the interviews, allowing the scientists to tell there stories. The first three scientists are young earth creationists, followed by a couple of proponents of intelligent design, and finally several scientists who favor evolutionary creation. The three young earth creationists are Kurt Wise, with... Read more
Wisdom in the Old Testament is seen by many as an Island Unto Itself. That is, Wisdom is not connected to covenant, to law, or to prophecy. It is secular, it is universal, it is non-redemptive, it is observational and experiential and open to anyone who ponders creation and the way of humans in the world. Wisdom, then is a fourth option for apprehending God’s ways for God’s people. As Tremper Longman, in The Fear of the Lord is Wisdom, says,... Read more
