I’ve been teaching for 37 years and the best experiences I have had teaching have been the cohorts at Northern Seminary. The combination of a week-long intensive with an active Facebook cohort page along with trips abroad for 10plus days … the classes become a fellowship of friends, of fellow followers of Jesus, and a classroom joy that transcends ordinary classes. Think of joining us this summer. We begin with a one-week intensive but then the classes during the school... Read more

What do you think? From The Guardian: Scientists have raised the stakes in the battle of the sexes over office air conditioning by discovering women’s brains work better at higher temperatures. Men, on the other hand, work better when the temperature is cooler, according to a study published in the journal PLOS One. The study, conducted in Germany, tested the ability of 500 men and women to perform a series of tasks at a variety of temperatures. At higher temperatures,... Read more

By Mike Glenn, author of an-about-to-be-released book on his mom: Coffee with Mom: Caring for a Parent with Dementia After the American Civil War, our country, both North and South, had much to grieve. Because both sides were Americans, more soldiers died in that war than any other American war. There were lots of widows, grieving parents, and children who had lost their fathers. Our country needed a season to grieve and for that reason, Memorial Day was established. It’s... Read more

I am reading through Walter Moberly’s recent book,  The Bible in a Disenchanted Age: The Enduring Possibility of Christian Faith. Chapter 3 presents the bulk of his argument for the Bible as a privileged set of writings, through the Spirit and about God and his engagement with his creation and creatures. The chapter deserves more than one post and I will only dabble into the beginning here. Moberly uses Charles Darwin and his well known (although less well understood) loss... Read more

This piece fascinated me for one significant reason: I did research one time on why evangelicals leave the church, or abandon their faith, and along with Hauna Ondrey, published it in a study of how various conversions occur — find the study of apostasy in Finding Faith, Losing Faith. I read hundreds of stories, and not one had anything to do with sexual abuse. Now we learn that 10% of 35 and unders have left church over this issue and 5%... Read more

Gun violence is matched seemingly weekly by pleas for gun control and by counter pleas for gun rights. All sorts of guns, hand guns and guns that make absolutely no sense for any person to own. What about Christians? What about the way of the cross and gun violence, gun control and gun rights? Does the way of the cross have anything to do with these questions? Is it all about rights? A new book by a pastor, one who... Read more

It is all over the news – well occasionally anyway. Religion is in a decline with a significant increase in the number of people claiming no religion. The change is particularly significant among younger adults.  Some applaud this trend as bringing enlightenment as we move away from superstition and into a more scientific age. Of course this is a simplification – the reality is more complex. Many of the so-called nones are quite disillusioned with religion – questioning religious teachings... Read more

Bob Allen But for the Bible it’s about gifting. Authority is for God and God alone, not for males (or females). The Greek word, translated below by Mohler with the word “authority,” is authentein and that’s at best an iffy translation. It more likely means something like seizing power. (See a brief on this passage in Blue Parakeet.) And, to make matters clearer, the NT does permit women to teach (Priscilla) and it permits women to speak words from God called prophetic language... Read more

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. BCP Read more
