By Jonathan Schut On March 28, 2019 Women of the Bible CBE Organizational News Church History In Matthew 26, Jesus visits the home of Simon the Leper. While he’s there, a woman enters and anoints him with expensive perfume. His disciples are indignant. They object to her actions and claim that the money spent on the perfume could have been used to help the poor. As I read the story, I almost expect Jesus to agree with the woman’s accusers. But... It is an interesting question not often asked How it is that one actually does Christian theology? Many pile up the Bible verses, arrange them into topics and sub-topics and topics-that-don’t-quite-fit, and then synthesize into the “biblical” view. How then does one do “biblical” theology on ethnicity or race or abortion or euthanasia or capitalism if one doesn’t have any Bible verses to add up — or not enough? A new book opens up this conversation in informed ways: David... Read more

Spring Break is about over and time to enter into the Spring schedule. It was so good to see History Channel’s kick-off episodes Monday night — check in again next Monday for episodes 3 and 4. She hit a home run!—means something went really well. Get it in the ballpark.—means to offer an estimate. He has two strikes against him. —means the odds are against you. He struck... Read more
Craig Allert in Early Christian Readings of Genesis One, makes reference in passing to a comment by Basil of Caesarea (ca. 329-379 AD) regarding the purpose of creation. This is worth some consideration. We find Basil’s comment in NPNF2-08. Basil: Letters and Selected Works, The Hexæmeron 1.5. The quote below is on pp. 54-55 available online at the link. It appears, indeed, that even before this world an order of things existed of which our mind can form an idea,... Read more
James Davison Hunter and Paul Nedelisky tackle the cultural trend (if not more) of thinking we can resolve our moral debates by greater science. Their book is called Science and the Good: The Tragic Quest for the Foundations of Morality. Their third chapter examines what happens with the Enlightenment and its aftermath into the 20th Century. It makes for a very good read. And so it was that the Enlightenment spawned optimism about the power of human reason to systematically comprehend... Read more
Miroslav Volf continues to open up doors to bigger and bigger discussions, this time with Matthew Croasmun. The title of their new short, but action-packed, book is For the Life of the World, and the subtitle packs their punch: Theology That Makes a Difference. Their big claim: “academic theology ought to be, but today largely isn’t, about what matters the most — the true life in the presence of God.” Theologians are not concerned enough with ultimate questions and the world’s destiny...
