This Saturday, Nov. 24, the Ukrainians commemorate a sad memorial day–“holodomor” (“harvest of death”), the Stalin-engineered, forced famine of 1932-1933 in which 7 to 10 million Ukrainians died. Stalin had the world press suppress this “holocaust” and not until the middle 1980s did the whole world come to grips with what Stalin did to the Ukrainian farmers. This video contains some graphic scenes, each designed to show the brutality of Stalin’s extermination of 7+ million Ukrainians. Read more

From Steve Johnson: Are you better off? Is there good evidence for progress? Over the past two decades, what have the U.S. trends been for the following important measures of social health: high school dropout rates, college enrollment, juvenile crime, drunken driving, traffic deaths, infant mortality, life expectancy, per capita gasoline consumption, workplace injuries, air pollution, divorce, male-female wage equality, charitable giving, voter turnout, per capita GDP and teen pregnancy? The answer for all of them is the same: The... Read more

Let’s pray this is a Middle East sunset of peace. Blog post of the week by Neil Godfrey: “The best way to understand just how ‘non-religious’ or ‘non-biblical’ are the books of the New Testament — that is, to understand just how much a product of their own wider Greco-Roman literary culture are those books — is to read the popular novels of that era. I enjoy both literature and ancient history so I loved reading the Collected Ancient Greek Novels edited by... Read more

Some are rejoicing that the “white Christian strategy” is losing while others in the church are wondering where to focus… but these numbers, if accurate, are worth pondering. Source: The Daily Beast. Click on the image for a full screen shot. [One of the most annoying features of posts like this for me is when some attempt to deconstruct the numbers without offering more accurate numbers; if you want to question numbers you need to provide better ones. Questions about... Read more

Quoting Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Life Together, EHP writes, “A pastor should never complain about his congregation, certainly never to other people, but also not to God. A congregation has not been entrusted to him [or her] in order that he should become its accuser before God and men.” Bonhoeffer and Peterson do not believe that pastors should turn a blind eye to the needs and challenges inherent in shepherding their congregations. But they both believe that the primary ministry of pastors... Read more

People who read a flat Bible, that is, people who think Exodus and Leviticus and Deuteronomy or Joshua and Judges are not just God’s Word but irrevocable commands for all of God’s people and stand at the same level as the Gospels or the Epistles, or people who think Jesus’ powerful statements in the Sermon on the Mount about violence and retaliation and loving one’s enemies aren’t the framework in which they are to read those Old Testament texts have... Read more

From Nancy Hellmich: 10:47AM EST November 21. 2012 – You probably don’t want to get up from Thanksgiving dinner feeling rounder than the turkey, but you may not want to fret about calories on this special holiday. So what to do? Consider taking a walk, a long one. If you go whole hog eating heaping portions, going back for seconds and enjoying pumpkin, pecan and apple pie with ice cream, and having a couple glasses of wine, you could wind up... Read more

From Gina Kolata: Good day to hear this; take a walk today with the family. “It is a sin for a healthy, capable young adult to enroll in a walking class,” he said. “It is obscene. What they are getting credit for is avoiding making any effort.” And therein lies a problem, Dr. Dishman and other researchers say. The public health message about exercise is that any amount is good and that walking is just fine. Everyone has been told,... Read more

From SI.com: Scott Wells was hardly the first player — nor will he be the last — to request to be allowed to sit out an NFL preseason game. But his circumstances were unique. Late last summer, the St. Louis Rams’ new starting center approached coach Jeff Fisher and explained his situation. On Aug. 18, the night the Rams were supposed to play Kansas City, Wells’ wife, Julie, was returning from a trip to Uganda. They hadn’t seen each other... Read more
