What awakened you to an answer to this question: Why do we have children? Have you thought about? Why do we? From Tim Dalrymple, a former star gymnast at Stanford, at Patheos: I hate the memory of it. I hate it. I hate how stiff my daughter’s body felt in my arms that night. I hate how vacant and soulless her face had become, unmoving save for the veined whites of her eyes as the irises fluttered up under the skull.... Read more

We are saddened to hear this and are glad to rejoice in the resurrection of our Lord. From CBE Arise. To our great surprise, our first president, beloved leader, and founder of Christians for Biblical Equality, Dr. Catherine Clark Kroeger, contracted pneumonia and died suddenly on Monday, February 14, 2011. If you are like me, you may find this news entirely out of character with Cathie. For so many of us, Cathie was the embodiment of unsinkable human vitality.A member... Read more

At the Westminster Dog show they failed to pick the obvious top choice, a Bichon: Though I’d not like a “dog” fight about this, what’s your pick for the best dog? Read more

How a country treats the most vulnerable of its people reveals the logic and system at work in that country. So I agree with Susan Jacoby who points out that how Egypt (and Afghanistan) treats women tells the story of justice. Like all Americans–unless they live on Planet Crackpot Caliphate–I hope that the joy on the faces of men, women and children in Cairo is only the precursor to the emergence of a more democratic society that fulfills their hopes. Also... Read more

Added (noon EST) Here is my premise, and I’d like to know what you think as you read though the entire post:  While church is and will remain at the epicenter of Christian community, essential for worship, for sacrament, for fellowship, the work of the church, the work of the pastor, is not to lead or cast vision or draw people in, but to equip, disciple, and send Christians out.  This requires a revolution in the way we view both... Read more

Tim Keller, in his (just about to appear in stores) new book, King’s Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus, examines the life of Jesus in two parts: King and Cross. The life of Jesus Keller studies is the Gospel of Mark, and I will do a series on Keller’s new book. What do you think of Keller’s trinitarian reading of the baptism? Do you think Mark believed that? I like an early confession on his... Read more

Last weekend Kris and I were at Journey Community Church. Because Journey is committed to the Jesus Creed, the event felt like a homecoming rather than a speaking event. For the past four weeks they have been teaching the Jesus Creed, reading 40 Days Living the Jesus Creed together, and more importantly actively practicing the Jesus Creed. Before I spoke on this platform, a video was played on the screens, a video that contained four stories — ordinary and all the... Read more

Mike Mercer, one who has taken up the task of Michael Spencer at iMonk, has a great post about church and what’s going on today … and it meshes well with my post this morning. My take on what has happened over the course of the last forty years is as follows. In evangelicalism in particular, we have raised a whole generation of Christians who were discipled not so much by traditional local churches as by parachurch ministries and churches that... Read more

A pastor sent me this note about One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow and I asked for his permission to post his letter and respond to it here. One.Life makes a case that diverges somewhat from some standard understandings of “kingdom.” He asked about it. Here’s his letter and my response is after the jump. I consider this view of the kingdom to be both the historic view and, at the same time, a view we need to recapture. Hi Scot,... Read more
