This post is from Adam McHugh, author of the very fine book Introverts in the Church: Finding Our Place in an Extroverted Culture, and those among us who write will say at times “That’s me!” When it comes to writing, my favorite book on writing … On Writing Well, 30th Anniversary Edition: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction. Now to Adam… I spend a lot of time reading what other writers say about writing. It’s an excellent way to procrastinate... Read more

We’ve been working through Denis O. Lamoureux’s book Evolutionary Creation: A Christian Approach to Evolution – a book that describes a way to move beyond the creation and evolutions debates. Chapter 4 of this book describes the role that ancient science plays in the text of scripture. This is something that totally blows past most modern readers of the Bible.  A little understanding of context helps to put many things into place. We will look at this from several directions... Read more

What happens when the Bible is studied at a university? The bigger question is this: What happens to the Bible when it is studied at a university? Those are questions behind Michael Legaspi’s excellent study The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies (Oxford Studies in Historical Theology). This book is chock-full of insights and observations, and is a book that ought to be on the shelf of every college and seminary library, for it examines what happens... Read more

From the NYTimes, which uses this opener for a set of responses: A new documentary, “Race to Nowhere,” looks at the pressures being put on high school students to build their résumés with Advance Placement classes and athletic accomplishments to improve their chances of acceptance at elite colleges and universities. The film captures the angst of boys who drop out of high school because of the pressure, girls who suffer stress-induced insomnia and students forced to cheat their way through classes.... Read more

Increasingly there are young leaders/pastors who are called “tentmakers”: they are both pastoring a church and working another job. Jeff Cook, author, professor and pastor — and tentmaker — begins a new series for us. Another term for such folks is that they are bi-vocational. From Jeff Cook: Tentmakers – Part 1 One of the more beautiful images in the New Testament is Paul’s second job. He makes tents. But of course a tent is the space that God choose... Read more

In a recent post I sketched and then briefly responded to Brent Landau’s new translation of The Revelation of the Magi. Brent Landau has responded here to my piece, and he’s a great example of civility in disagreement. I have clipped the first two paragraphs and I encourage you to wander over to Patheos’ site and you can come back here (or stay there) for the conversation that we can have about his response. I was delighted to read Scot McKnight’s... Read more

For those of you who clamor for more information — and solid, reliable, accurate information — about Judaism, there have been only a few options: read all the sources and remember what you have read, read some of it and have some good books with the right studies and information, buy the old (and ever increasing in age) Encyclopedia Judaica, know someone or … now you can buy an absolutely first class one-volume (heavy) volume called: The Eerdmans Dictionary of... Read more
