Our newest book, One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow , is now shipping from Amazon — so it should be in your bookstores, too. At Saddleback last night I was asked to speak on the topic of one of the chapters in One.Life — The Radical Jesus. Rick Warren is developing five questions about Jesus this Advent, and last night’s was “What child is this?” So there are five speakers, five approaches to the question, and I was asked to address... Read more

When I began studying Greek my professor used an old classical Greek grammar by Crosby and Schaeffer. When I taught Beginning Greek at TEDS, we used Wenham’s grammar. But the advent of aspectual theory made the need for a new greek grammar a major venture — and I’m happy to see that the right people (Stan Porter, J.T. Reed, and M. Brook O’Donnell) have written that grammar, and there’s an accompanying workbook. If you need to rework your beginning Greek,... Read more

Snow works its little miracles! This post by Gary Stratton has to be one of the best blog posts of the year. Ted links us to a beautiful version of “Immanuel.” Jim Martin on dealing with weariness. Bill Donahue is a leadership guy, and this post is just one of his many that many find helpful. An excellent post by Dan Reid (where have you been Dan?) on publishing challenges: One and Two. Ever have this experience of Janet‘s? I... Read more

I’ve made my recommendation clear for the very cheap and efficient AeroPress, but I have to make a recommendation for an espresso machine. I never thought I’d do this. I love my old Rancilio Silvia espresso machine. It’s sturdy and reliable and makes a great espresso. But when we were in Ireland I was given a cup of coffee from a Nespresso machine and was swept off my feet. Kris says I’m a coffee snob. I respond by saying I’ll... Read more

From David Brooks: Do you think Obama is a network liberal or a cluster liberal? Barack Obama ran for president as a network liberal, and entranced a Facebook nation. But in office, Obama, like George W. Bush before him, narrowed his networks. To get things done quickly, he governed like a cluster liberal, relying on partisan leaders. The results were predictable: insularity, alienation and defeat. So now we are headed toward divided government. But there is a whiff of coalition-building... Read more

When it comes to accusations against the God of the Bible, one of the most notable finger pointings concerns the sacrifice of Isaac — called the Aqedah (binding). (After the jump I provide the whole text from Genesis 22. Paul Copan, in Is God a Moral Monster?: Making Sense of the Old Testament God, examines this text and the common accusations against it. Copan sketches a few common complaints: that this text records a “monstrous test” (what kind of God... Read more

We’ve had some fun over the years at this blog site when it comes to contests. The funniest one had to be the “guess what’s in this bag” contest, which T won and is still wearing his crocs!
