Here are few Ron Santo-isms I find on the internet, and those of us who listened to him remember these and others and can hear him say these things. Ron never started a sentence he thought needed to finish. My favorite Ron story on the radio was the usual banter between Pat and himself. Pat asked what time he got to bed and Ron said he the managers and coaches were in the hotel bar and he thought it was... Read more

We’ve been working through Denis O. Lamoureux’s book Evolutionary Creation: A Christian Approach to Evolution – a book that describes a way to move beyond the creation and evolutions debates. In the posts Tuesday we discussed the question of divine action in creation. Today we will look at another topic from the third chapter of the book, The Creator in a Designed and Evolving Universe. After his discussion of divine action Dr. Lamoureux covers the question of  intelligent design in... Read more

We need to be sensitive to singleness but we also need to be aware of a profound new study called When Marriage Disappears: Here are the central theses: 1. Marriage is an emerging dividing line between America’s moderately educated middle and those with college degrees. 2.  Marital quality is declining for the moderately educated middle but not for their highly educated peers. 3. Divorce rates are up for moderately educated Americans, relative to those who are highly educated. 4.  The... Read more

This is a letter from Kim Jones, an advocate for justice in the Dallas area and who is organizing with others actions that will help prevent human trafficking at the SuperBowl. Please read and ponder and pray and act. Over the past year most of you have been receiving my email on human trafficking. It has been an unbelievable experience for me and for others as well. It has caused many to think, pray and want to become further involved... Read more

Paul Copan, in his exceptionally helpful (and very timely) new book, Is God a Moral Monster?: Making Sense of the Old Testament God, defends the God of the Old Testament. One of the criticisms of the Old Testament God is that God breaks out into a monumental rage when his chosen people flirt with rival gods — and Bill Maher says this “attribute” of God isn’t even “moral.” Is this God petty and insecure? Copan begins by defining what we... Read more

There’s some discussion now about Brent Landau’s Revelation of the Magi: The Lost Tale of the Wise Men’s Journey to Bethlehem, a new and previously inaccessible translation of a (Syriac) Christian fictional, fantastical text about the magi. Patheos is hosting a commons on this very book. Since we know so little about the magi, they have become the source of imagination. And Landau is right to point out that much of what people think comes from Christian legends and art.... Read more

One of my students asked me which of Derek Webb’s song I most liked, and I said “Mockingbird.” Here’s a live performance, with a bit of an audience chat session for the first two minutes. And a link to the MP3 after the video. What’s your favorite Derek Webb song? Here’s the MP3 page. Thanks to JR Briggs. Read more

From a piece I wrote for Barefoot Ministries’ Slant 33 blog: I was asked what are my top three books on leadership and, well, I wrote this in the middle of the piece. So I want to put my idea on the line and see where it leads us. We have one leader, and his name is Jesus. I want to bang this home with a quotation from Jesus from Matthew 23, where he seems to be staring at the... Read more
