On my commute recently I listened to the audio of a panel discussion at The University of Pennsylvania on “The Challenge of Reading the Bible Today: Can the Bible be read both Critically and Religiously? Jewish, Catholic and Protestant Perspectives,” with Marc Brettler (Brandeis University) giving a Jewish perspective, Daniel J. Harrington (Boston College) giving a Catholic perspective and Peter Enns giving a protestant perspective. The audio of the panel discussion is available on Pete’s blog a time to tear... Read more

If every evangelical read Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Discipleship, evangelicalism would be nobler. The book is theologically profound, overtly Lutheran, and a seminal study connected to a heroic figure. In uncompromising ways Bonhoeffer’s book assaults the easy-believism of Western evangelicalism and exposes its gospel as too often a caricature. It is always encouraging to see more and more evangelicals looking into Bonhoeffer’s work. I suggest that folks read not only his famous discipleship book, but also Life Together and Prayerbook of the... Read more

WaPo has a panel discussion about whether or not America is exceptional.. Here is their introduction: Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty wrote Monday about the growing use of the idea of “American exceptionalism” by political conservatives as a “battle cry from a new front in the ongoing culture wars.” Sarah Palin and many other prominent conservatives assert that “God has granted America a special role in human history.” It is this belief about America’s destiny that they say is... Read more

This post is by Chuck DeGroat; I was sent a link by a friend and just have to (re)post the whole thing. Let’s discuss the church and singleness in a way that helps us all. What is your church doing about singleness? How do people understand “singleness”? What advice do you have for churches about singleness? NOVEMBER 27, 2010 I’ve been married for 16 years, so I can’t very well say, “I understand.”  But, I’ve ministered among college/career aged men... Read more

The Jesus Creed Blog is committed to the word “conversation” as what we want to happen daily at this site. Long ago Peggy Brown wrote up a post called the parable of the Jesus Creed, and it was about how to behave in the comments, and I think she captured the subject of this post. Instead of writing a parable, though, I’ll write some straight prose. My prose is about words, and these words make clear what we want to... Read more

From CT: “Only with great care. For thousands, carols will be their only link with a church. At the same time, sentimentality is perhaps the single most dangerous feature of our Church and culture—and the sentimental air is never thicker than at Christmas. The Incarnation is messy, dirty, and resonates with the crucifixion. We need a new wave of carol writing that can gradually swill out the nonsense and catch the piercing, joy-through-pain refrains of the New Testament.” Jeremy Begbie,... Read more

Michael Gerson, at WaPo, on … Do you think this is spin? Is the sabotage theory a spin? Yet this is precisely what the sabotage theorists must deny. They must assert that the case for liberal policies is so self-evident that all opposition is malevolent. But given the recent record of liberal economics, policies that seem self-evident to them now seem questionable to many. Objective conditions call for alternatives. And Republicans are advocating the conservative alternatives – monetary restraint, lower... Read more
