Last Saturday night Kris and I were at Willow with Laura and Mark. The band, led by North Park’s own Matt Lundgren, started to play a good song and then another song. Then I looked up at the big screen — another North Parker, Becky Johnson, of Beckon Q — a missional band in the Chicago area — and a former student of ours. I was so pumped to see Becky singing with Matt. |inline

Yesterday I was at Willow’s youth leadership conference called Shift. A full day but lots of fun. I’m not a youth minister, obviously — nor was I a very good one when I gave it a whirl, but if I were one today these kinds of conferences would be a highlight. |inline

Nancy Ortberg has just published a book that Kris and I both enjoyed, and now our daughter, Laura, is reading it (Nancy was one of Laura’s leaders in the days of Axis at Willow Creek). There’s a depth as well as an angle on what genuine Christianity is in this book. Nancy isn’t afraid to step on toes or to say what she thinks. So, now we’ve got Looking for God. Nancy was willing to answer five questions I sent to her about this book. So, here you go … No, before that let me say this. I read this book in ms form and I told her that one chp was too short; she wrote back, “That’s all I had to say.” I loved it. |inline

With the new Barna report finding that born again voters are not supporting Republicans as they once did, a book like Randy Balmer’s God in the White House becomes all the more pertinent. On top of this observation I also want to say that an element of this reconfiguration of the political scene is the emerging movement. Things are changing friends. Those who predict are usually wrong; I’ll avoid predicting. But things are changing. |inline

It’s not easy to decide when the Christmas season begins, perhaps when Thanksgiving is over or at the lighting of the First Advent candle or when grading is over and the grades are submitted or when … it’s all a part of it, isn’t it. We attended Willow Creek’s service on Saturday, along with my mom and dad and Kris’ mom, Laura and Mark, Pat and Bob. Here’s how I put it: |inline

Three convergences go into this post. The first was Willow Creek’s decision to end Axis, something that I both understood and worried about. The second is Robert Wuthnow’s fact-filled and nearly undeniable claim that the generation of 18-30 year olds threatens the livelihood of the future of the church. And now I’ve read an article by Christian Smith. Here is a brief summary and I’m interested in your take, especially if you are in ministry to young adults. |inline

Willow Creek’s annual youth ministry conference, April 9-11, is called “Shift.” I will participating in several ways and hope you can find your way to this event if you are involved in youth ministry. We’ve been given the chance to give a discount through this blog:
