I will be leading two breakout sessions at Willow’s Shift 2008 Conference (April 9-11). Our first one will be on how to teach and read the Bible with an emerging generation and the second one on a kingdom/missional life.

Tim Keel, founding pastor at Jacob’s Well in Kansas City, says this: “My former church was a suburban megachurch functioning under Willow Creek’s seeker-targeted church paradigm. I was a naive and idealistic twenty-seven-year-old wanting to call off all bets in order to creatively engage everything in the pursuit of God.” This, from p. 83, is a defining theme for Tim Keel’s new book, Intuitive Leadership. |inline

We had a busy week. After speaking at Willow’s group life conference Thursday morning and then doing a workshop on Missional Jesus Thursday afternoon, we got up at 4:15am Friday and flew to Baltimore where we were picked up by three missional pastors: Brian, Mark and JR Woodward. |inline

Go ahead, take notes right here and let all the readers see what’s going on. (I’ve never spoken to this many folks before.) |inline

Today I will be attending Willow Creek’s Leadership Summit. During the afternoon I have been asked to blog about the session of Floyd Flake (he looks like Dr. J so I know I’ll like him) and it will appear on Willow’s site and on this site. I’ll be checking in on this blog throughout the day.

Yesterday we got up early and I called my father to wish him a happy father’s day. Kris and I enjoyed a cool hour or so on our screen porch with the birds flitting everywhere, said our prayers, and went to the 9am Willow Creek service with Laura and Mark. Bill Hybels gave a masterful talk about his pride in the fathers of Willow Creek because of their building into the lives of their children — and this departing from the tendency to bring in Chapin’s “Cats ‘n the Cradle” song as the theme of a Father’s Day talk. |inline

If I were a seminary President, the first person I’d appoint as professor-pastor- sage would be John Koenig. John Koenig, built like Abe Lincoln, is a rare combination of Episcopal priest, New Testament scholar, anabaptist character, and gentle spirit — not to mention Elisabeth, his gracious wife who is a scholar herself. I have known John for years, but a couple years back we had dinner together and I have become an admirer of his wisdom. And my admiration begins with the observation that he has learned, as few have, to write academic books that can be read by lay folks. And Soul Banquets: How Meals Become Mission in the Local Congregation is pure gold. I won’t survey the book in detail, and this is why: |inline
