Yesterday I received this email (which I use here by permission): Dear John, Hi. My name is [deleted]. I am nearly 48-years-old, and am married with two grown children. I am also a Methodist minister in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I have come to believe that I live in a black hole which is unknown to other Christians. (more…) Read more

Yesterday I posted a piece about Jerry Buell, the high school teacher in Lake County, Florida, who likens himself to “Jesus Christ himself,” and is proud to have written on his Facebook page that same-sex marriage is a “cesspool” that makes him want to puke. This afternoon I heard from Equality Florida, who wanted me to see this letter, just out from Florida Rep. Scott Randolph. It’s directed to Debbie Stivender, Chair of the Lake County School Board. This week kids across the country, just returning to school, learned that it's perfectly okay for their teachers to bully gay people. Brace yourselves for the worst. Read more

Today is Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Through my friendship with Pastor Bob, a leader of San Diego’s interfaith community, I received, about a week ago, an invitation which read: (more…) Read more

This weekend just past Kathy Baldock and Lisa Salazar went to Gay Pride at Charlotte, NC. (Here’s what Kathy wrote about the event before attending. Stay tuned to her blog for her upcoming report of her experiences at Charlotte GP.) Also at the event was Michael “God Has a Better Way Than Homosexuality” Brown. Brown, who has chosen to make his “ministry” out of belittling and harassing LGBTQ people, was there because the media was there, and he craves attention... Read more

Last night a woman who originally wrote to inquire about access to Seven Reasons sent me this poetic piece, in which she succinctly shared the history of the descent of her once loving marriage into a harrowing miasma of pain and fear. She and I hope what she’s written will serve to bring healing to any other woman who finds herself in a situation similar to hers. Please pass it along to anyone for whom you think it may be... Read more

[polldaddy poll=5539666]Okay, so just to be clear. This image came about relative to an online discussion I was having with an Episcopal reverend and a Southern Baptist pastor. The Episcopal reverend thought that in the main progressive Christians, loving Christ as they do, would appreciate this picture, because they would feel that it illustrates Jesus showing his feelings about those who use his name to bring harm or injustice to others: they would appreciate, he thought, the moral indignation it... Read more

This is Dan Wilkinson, of Wilkinson Web Design. As you can see, he lives in the woods. It’s so sad. He’s such a talented web designer. I don’t know what happened to his life. But now he has to build all of his websites from his mobile phone. Doesn’t he do awesome work, though? Look at my brand-new website right here! Amazing, right? It took Dan two-and-a-half years to build it by tapping on his cell phone in the woods.... Read more

Here’s an absolutely heart-breaking letter I got in yesterday. It’s used here by permission. Some details have been changed. I get more of these than, God knows, I wish anyone ever had to write. If you’ve ever wondered what it really feels like to be stuck in a horrifically toxic marriage, here you go. (more…) Read more
