It’s Friday afternoon. I’m sitting in this place. I am not drunk. But from the edge of my now slightly shimmering consciousness being drunk is very definitely beckoning to me, using as its soft siren the second half of the Hulk-sized mug o’ delicious Karl Strauss Oktoberfest beer insolently poised on my table not a wrist flick away. Lately I have had (as have all of us) reason to wonder if there’s a solution to the problem of Hispanics illegally working and immigrating here. And after reading about and studying the matter, I’ve concluded that there simply isn’t. Here’s the way I’m understanding the matter. As ever, I welcome further enlightenment. So let’s carefully consider the idea that without religion that is just what we’d have. To begin, then, we must imagine that no people anywhere in the world have so much as... Read more

Being honest is a good starting point in building trust. — Sarah Palin On a Barnes and Noble display table I yesterday came across a short stack of the paperback edition of Sarah Palin’s Going Rogue. (You know how at a Barnes and Noble, or at any big bookstore, they have all those books displayed on tables? No one who works at the store decided to put those books where they are. Book publishers pay a great deal of money... Read more

One of the primary arguments atheists use in their case against the existence of God is that a compassionate, all-powerful God wouldn’t allow evil to exist in the world. The answer to that problem is simple: it’s people who do evil, not God. What people most often mean by the question, “Why does God allow evil to exist?” is “Why doesn’t God stop people from doing evil?” (more…) Read more
