It’s the eternal question: Why do bad things happen to good people?

That is at the center of a new movie being released on Jan. 29, called “Greater.” It’s the story of college football player Brandon Burlsworth (Christopher Severio), who overcomes enormous challenges to win a spot on the Arkansas Razorbacks, even without a scholarship (and being a top scholar at the same time).

But on the eve of reaping all the benefits of his hard work, Burlsworth is killed, sending shockwaves through his friends, family and community. Most especially hit is his older brother, Marty, played by Catholic Neal McDonough, who goes through a serious crisis of faith.

From the press release:

His loss was particularly hard on Marty, who struggles in the film to hang on to his own faith in the aftermath of Brandon’s death – confronted at his brother’s funeral by a mysterious Farmer (Nick Searcy) who tries to convince him that a truly loving God would not let such a bad thing happen to someone who was so good.

“This film is as much about Marty’s journey as it is about Brandon’s,” [writer/producer  Brian] Reindl explained. “He goes through something we all face when we experience tragedy and trials: Which voices do we listen to? The voices of faith, hope, and trust… or the voices of doubt, disbelief, and despair?

Also starring are Leslie Easterbrook, Michael Park and Nick Searcy (director of the upcoming “Gosnell” movie).
