15 Catholic Things that Caught My Eye on Super Tuesday (March 1, 2016) 2016-03-01T13:39:30-05:00

1. This sounds right:

2. Remember your mercies, O Lord.

3. Pope Francis’ homily this morning: Divine mercy forgives and forgets

4. Bishop Sam Jacobs: To forget does not mean to erase it from our memory, but rather to be free from the negative bondage

5. Fr. Bill Byrne on Confession: Sin is not who we are, it is who we are not.

6. Fr. Roger Landry on Paying God’s Lavish Mercy Forward (his homily for today in text and audio)

7. From Saint Peter Chrysologus in the Office of Readings in the Liturgy of the Hours today:

Offer your soul to God, make him an oblation of your fasting, so that your soul may be a pure offering, a holy sacrifice, a living victim, remaining your own and at the same time made over to God. Whoever fails to give this to God will not be excused, for if you are to give him yourself you are never without the means of giving.

To make these acceptable, mercy must be added. Fasting bears no fruit unless it is watered by mercy. Fasting dries up when mercy dries up. Mercy is to fasting as rain is to the earth. However much you may cultivate your heart, clear the soil of your nature, root out vices, sow virtues, if you do not release the springs of mercy, your fasting will bear no fruit.

When you fast, if your mercy is thin your harvest will be thin; when you fast, what you pour out in mercy overflows into your barn. Therefore, do not lose by saving, but gather in by scattering. Give to the poor, and you give to yourself. You will not be allowed to keep what you have refused to give to others.

8. Fr. Patrick Brennan reflects on the first reading today:

In Lent, only when the we see the need to repent will we know the closeness of the merciful God to us. When we sit and reflect upon our lives, a spirit of repentance enables us to fathom its complexities and see all things in the light of the death and resurrection of God’s Son. Repentance restores the reassurance of God’s abiding presence.

9. Archbishop DiNoia on patience and repentance.

10. Lent as spring training.
And do pray for the author, Brother Humbert Kilanowski, O.P., and his brothers who will become deacons on Saturday!

11. Fr. Augustine Tolton: America’s First Black Priest

14. This looks good. And it would be hard to beat the name of the convent there:
