HOBBY LOBBY, the craft store which challenged the Affordable Care Act’s requirement and refused to pay for abortifacient drugs as part of its employee health package, has once again celebrated the Christmas holiday by placing a full-page advertisement in newspapers around the country. Their latest message was designed in-house by an employee in Hobby Lobby’s art department.  The advertisement, which I spotted in the Detroit News, ran on Christmas in 460 publications across the country.  This year’s ad features St.... Read more

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, English writer, is known for his published works on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. But did you know that he penned a hymn? And did you know that the heavy metal band Iron Maiden used Chesterton’s lyrics in their recording “Revelations”? “O God of Earth and Altar” was written in 1906.  Its second verse contains clear references to the Litany from... Read more

On December 30, 717 (or December 30, 720, depending on which source you read), St. Egwin of Evesham, O.S.B. died in Evesham Abbey, the monastery he founded. So Egwin is the saint of the day–but golly! I’ve never heard of him!  So here’s his story: Egwin was a Benedictine monk and, later, the third Bishop of Worcester in England.   A descendant of Mercian kings, possibly a nephew of the pious King Æthelred of Mercia, Egwin was known as a protector of... Read more

This Christmas, Palestinian Authority officials are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and claiming him as a fellow Palestinian–even though the state of Palestine did not exist at the time of Christ.  He is, they claim, their first martyr. According to WorldNetDaily: Last week, for example, PA President Mahmoud Abbas stated, “We celebrate the birth of Jesus, a Palestinian messenger of love, justice and peace.” Palestinian Media Watch notes that Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash announced,... Read more

Some years ago, a coworker told me the story of the Vacuum Cleaner and the Bow.  My coworker was by nature a neatnik, putting his dirty clothes in the hamper and his mail in the trash as a matter of habit. When he married a woman who was a clutterer, there began a silent war between the two.  She left the upright vacuum cleaner sitting in the living room; and after several days, he made his point–adorning it with a large red... Read more

A new video released by the Vatican is raising eyebrows among some conservatives.   The Women’s Consultation Group at the Pontifical Council for Culture has prepared the video, which features an attractive woman who, with a shake of her blonde curls, invites women to submit a photo or a one-minute video of  their “vision” for their role as women.   Critics have called the video “suggestive”–criticizing the sexy model’s false eyelashes and sultry poses.  One website calls the video a “degrading... Read more
