If you’re Catholic, you’ve heard this before, right? Your Protestant friend says, “Why should I confess my sins to a priest?” Chances are he’s going to offer one of two arguments: I have a personal relationship with Jesus. I can talk to God directly. Jesus is the only mediator between God and man. Well, that’s easy! Your first counter-argument can be an explanation:  We’re simply doing what Jesus told us to do. Catholics don’t just confess their sins to a... Read more

I am a lazy cook. There was a time when I spent a lot of time poring over cookbooks, fine-tuning shopping lists, experimenting with bananas flambeau, stuffing a rainbow trout and stitching it closed. That was Then, this is Now. Then, I was learning to separate eggs to create the fluffiest omelet, to stir a roux until no lumps remain. Now, if I spend more than fifteen minutes over a special dish, I feel that I should be [choose one] writing a novel, cleaning... Read more

Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis, who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage certificates after the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, is back in court. This time, Davis has asked the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals to hear oral argument of her case “due to the weighty constitutional and statutory issues at stake in this case.” Defending her religious rights in the case is the Liberty Counsel, an international nonprofit, litigation, education, and policy organization dedicated to advancing... Read more

Hillary Clinton, speaking to students at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, has called for the death penalty to be “very limited and rare.” Her statement was odiously reminiscent of public policy during President Bill Clinton’s Administration in the 1980s, when he contended that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare.” Mrs. Clinton has steadfastly held to that same policy, insisting that women must have that choice–even in the latest months of pregnancy. Clinton outlined her belief regarding the use... Read more

Coffee, pizza, artichokes and grappa: For a resident of Rome, these familiar flavors beckon on every corner. Popular food and travel blogger Elizabeth Minchilli knows all about it. Her latest  book, Eating Rome: Living the Good Life in the Eternal City, is a potpourri of recipes, photos, historical insights and personal anecdotes. I loved the book–but so did my daughter Jennifer. Jenn’s got some first-hand experience at Detroit’s Avalon Bakery, and she’s quite the connoisseur of wines and ethnic cuisine.  That’s why I invited... Read more

It is probable that there is among Protestants a more obstinate—for I really must say so—a more complete misunderstanding on this point of doctrine than on any other. I say “obstinate” for the truth on this point has been stated so repeatedly that it seems impossible that it should not have been, at least to a great extent, accepted in the Protestant world by this time, had it not been for a firm determination not to accept it, and to... Read more

In a case that makes medical history, a California physician was convicted today of second-degree murder, in connection with the overdose deaths of three patients. Dr. Hsiu-Ying “Lisa” Tseng was found guilty of second-degree murder after prescribing painkillers to three patients who later overdosed. She was accused of ignoring “red flags” about her prescribing habits. In one case, a patient overdosed while still in her clinic. She had also received nine phone calls in less than three years from authorities... Read more

Facing an aging demographic and a lopsided, male-dominated society which has made common the problems of prostitution, sex slavery, and the specter of “shared wives,” the Communist government of China has now decided to “permit” married couples to have two children. The government mandated one-child policy, instituted by the Communist Party in 1979 in a misguided attempt to limit population growth, has shown itself to be harmful to society in more ways than one. There are too few younger people to... Read more

“I was so consumed with fetal tissue, I was ready to drive to northern Michigan and have a bonfire. I was just trying to find out how I wouldn’t get stopped, or how far into the woods I would have to go to have this fire that nobody was going to see me.” That’s Michigan abortionist Renee Chelian speaking. Chelian is executive director of Northland Family Planning Centers, which operates clinics in the Detroit suburbs of Westland, Southfield and Sterling... Read more

Social media is the best thing since sliced bread! Through my blog, through Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn, I’ve met new people and made new friends. We’ve exchanged ideas, shared photos and celebrations and prayers, and have sometimes persuaded one another to consider a different perspective. But I’ve had a hard time lately wading through the debris of the combox. The constant haranguing and name-calling and mocking that goes on under the guise of “smart speech” is like so much flotsam... Read more
