Timothy Murray, a nonpracticing Catholic priest, was sentenced today to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison for possession and distribution of child pornography. In 2004, Murray was pastor of St. Edith Catholic Church in Livonia, Michigan when reports surfaced that he had abused a 13-year-old boy at another parish where he had served in the mid-1980s.   The Archdiocese of Detroit immediately removed him from ministry, although at the time, Michigan’s statute of limitations meant that Murray could not... Read more

Today, on the 41st anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision, we look back on 56 million abortions in the United States.  That’s 56 million babies killed in their mothers’ wombs. Here is the sign language for abortion.  Sort of straight and to the point, isn’t it? Read more

The media’s love affair with Pope Francis may have just ended. Left-leaning journalists who thought he was going to be soft on the issues must have been disappointed when today, the Pope tweeted: “I join the March for Life in Washington with my prayers.  May God help us respect all life, especially the most vulnerable.” In late 2013, Pope Francis drew criticism from some conservatives and praise from pro-abortion forces, when he said that the Church should not emphasize its... Read more

It was hot, and we were tired.  It was September 2000, our first trip to Rome, and our band of seven hearty travelers had embarked on a long walk through the streets of the city to the Piazza Navona. The Piazza stands on the site of the first-century Stadium of Domitian.  In its center, Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Horses) is topped by the Obelisk of Domitian, brought here in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius. ... Read more

All Allyson and her friends want is a peaceful, grown-up evening of dinner and conversation . . . a long-needed moms’ night out.     But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for three hours—what could go wrong?   MOMS’ NIGHT OUT is an endearing true-to-life family comedy that celebrates the beautiful mess called parenting.       That’s how the film’s promoters describe... Read more

I love to sing at Mass.  Recalling an adage attributed to St. Augustine, I believe that he who sings, prays twice. From my vantage point in the third row, I want Jesus–waiting and listening from up there in the tabernacle–to hear my prayer; and so I sing loudly. (This is a problem when I’m surrounded by tight-lipped pewsitters.  I once carried a tune well; but following a throat infection years ago, I’m wont to drop a full octave here and... Read more

William the Good may have stood in the great cathedral which he commissioned, staring up at the golden mosaics with pride. Today, armchair tourists can view Monreale Cathedral from a perspective that was not possible during William II’s reign:  a close-range aerial tour. At the invitation of the Archdiocese of Monreale, videographer Alexander Spinnato has filmed the cathedral’s splendid art utilizing a camera mounted to a drone.  The drone entered through the Romanesque bronze doors, swooped between pillars, skirted the... Read more

A Pastor Walks Into a Bar… It’s not a joke!  A new sitcom is in development which chronicles the unlikely story of a pastor who inherits the Hard Knocks Bar right across the street from his church. Actor Stephen Baldwin would play Pastor Keaton of Solid Rock Church, the lead role in “Rock and a Hard Place”, a television series envisioned by radio personality and comedian Darren Marlar.  John W. Schlitt of the Christian rock band Petra has also... Read more
