The season of autumn whispers to me in the mornings, reminding me that the Wheel of the Year is turning. My reply was a simple elemental ritual welcoming the fall, with the added energy of the pentagram representing the wholeness in all things. I love to get back to the simplicity of evoking the elements, especially at the seasonal transitions. They form all that lives and for that, I honor them always.
The Fall Equinox arrives here on the coast of Nova Scotia right on schedule. Leaves are just starting to turn, there’s migratory birds everywhere, and the mornings are cool. While the daytime temperature might reach the 80s, there’s no denying that the change is soon. I was born for the fall – the new school year, the darkness and the storms that rage.
While I’ll be participating in more complex rituals over the next couple of weeks, culminating in what my group of friends calls “Pagan Thanksgiving,” I love being able to get out into the woods by myself. There’s much to do in the days ahead, but with fall calling to me I had no choice but to answer with a simple ritual embracing the coming season. Autumn is associated most strongly, especially for me here on the Atlantic coast, with the element of water. Although we have not yet experienced the fierce energy of a fall storm, their possibility is on the wind just like fall.
I’m so fortunate to have a sheltered grove where I do private rituals that shields me from these autumnal breezes. In my little Witch’s Grotto, I am surrounded by the forest and serenaded by a small stream. The sprawling apple tree, still barren at the Vernal Equinox, is now resplendent in foliage, although the apples are sour. I’ve been hanging charms on the tree since I welcomed spring in this space. For autumn, I made new elemental charms along with a pentagram for my tree. To keep the energy of the elements going in my home, I collected small bits of each one in bowls that I charged and will place on my inside altar. To me, a simple elemental ritual gets to the very core of life and witchcraft. It is the four elements of earth, air, fire and water from which all things are formed. All systems and practices of witchery consist of them, even if we don’t usually think about them. I honored the elements and ask their continued blessing for the season ahead when the sun was brightest.
An Elemental Ritual Welcoming Autumn
Mighty Elements to you I call,
Join me now.
Earth, Air, Fire and Water,
And the union of the four with Ether,
The wholeness of all things,
All that is and ever will be.
Hail Earth and the season of winter,
The darkness of regeneration,
Your time will come again soon.
Hail Air and the season of spring,
When all is born anew,
To the distant future when you return.
Hail Fire and the season of summer,
I bid you fond farewell,
For your countless blessings, I thank you.
To the season of water,
The coming storms,
The floods, and the gentle rains,
Greetings to you, season of decay and destruction!
Bringing death to all that which no longer serves,
Returning it to the earth.
To the emotional cleansing power of water,
And the season of removal,
I bid you welcome!
Hail Autumn and Water!
May the coming season bless us all.
