Hail to the Goddesses of Women, Choice and Power: Spell for Reproductive Freedom

Hail to the Goddesses of Women, Choice and Power: Spell for Reproductive Freedom May 18, 2019

Women’s reproductive freedom is currently under attack, yet again. This is a call for witches to do battle with those who use women as a means for political gain. If we fail to answer this cry, we ourselves are opening the door to the next burning times for those men who seek to control women will come for us, too. Asteria, Leto, Artemis and Hekate. Four goddesses related by blood, readily sharing their powers of reproductive rights, choice, freedom and justice with us to bring an end to this campaign. Call upon them in this spell for women’s reproductive freedom.

Recent events in various U.S. states have once again attacked women’s right to be sovereign in their own bodies. This political agenda targets women, not because of their supposed Christian beliefs as they claim, but as a desperate vote grab for the ignorant. Women, once again, are victimized in political games over which they have little control.

We must remember that the most powerful seek only more power. The means by which they achieve it is not of concern. They will use women’s rights as an issue to gain votes from the segment of the population that has been duped into believing that the government should be involved in women’s private choices. They use the lies of false Christianity to spread their hatred of women. They defile the very nature of pregnancy and birth with their attempts to control women’s bodies. This is all a smokescreen for votes.

This is the new Burning Times.

By attacking women, the powerful deflect from their own failures. They summon the worst in the weakest, creating a mob mentality of attack. If you think abortion rights have nothing to do with witchcraft, you are 100% wrong. Witches, wise women, healers have always provided reproductive health services. The midwife traditionally helped women ended pregnancies when necessary. The witch works with herbs that are contraceptive, can bring the end of pregnancy, and assist with birth. Death and life are the witches’ domain.

Furthermore, we bear the ancestral scars of our foremothers who were imprisoned, tortured and murdered for being a “witch.” In many cases, these purported witches were providing reproductive health care to women.

There is absolutely nothing new about attacking women.

All human life is sacred. This is not to be debated. However, the mother holds the power of creation and destruction. It is up to her to decide her own future and that of her children. If you think for one second that these politicians care at all about women and children, you are 100% wrong. Controlling women, and other marginalized groups, has always been the campaign of a certain class of men in power.

The patriarchy is the problem.

These latest battles are only part of the war against us. As long as the patriarchy remains, the threat to not only women, but all witches and pagans is imminent. Hear me. This current climate of freedom to practice how we feel led is as fragile as an egg. They will come for us as soon as they believe political gain can be made from our blood.

Goddesses of Women, Choice and Power

This spell evokes four ancient goddesses that represent the power needed to win the battle for women’s reproductive health. They knew the pain of rape, of childbirth and of having their choices taken from them by powerful men. All four found ways to triumph over their oppressors.

Asteria, Titan Goddess of the Stars, who was Hekate’s mother, was herself raped. She descended from the heavens to aid Leto, her sister, with the birth of her twins, Artemis and Apollo. Leto who was also raped, had been vilified and exiled by a jealous Hera so that there was no place for her to give birth. Asteria fell to earth, sacrificing herself by creating the island of Delos so that Leto had a place to bear her twins. With no assistance, Leto brought forth Artemis who then delivered Apollo, thus giving her a keen spirit of justice for women and children. Artemis as the huntress served no man. Her arrows bring justice by destroying the zealots. Hekate, daughter, niece and cousin to them respectively, bore her own children in myths. She is also known as The Mother of All to some. For all, she is the Goddess of Witchcraft.

All four are revered as Eileithyia, Divine Midwives. Powerful matrons of women, protectors and interveners. They are not the timid nor the weak. They know that the freedom over a women’s own choices are paramount. All bore the weight of having choice taken from them. More importantly, they found the power to topple their enemies. They know the women’s body is the temple, not to be violated.

Spell to the Goddesses of Women, Choice and Power for Women’s Reproductive Freedom

The time has come to claim our power as witches who cast spells to bring the demise of the power mongers who use women’s lives for political gain.

I’m doing this spell on a very special Full Moon, that of May when Hekate’s Sacred Fires are summoned. Please do as you feel led. I’m asking you to comment below if you do this working or your own so that we can use this post as our circle of power to bring the end to the chains on women’s reproductive rights. Adapt this spell to be as specific as you need it to be. Usually more specific spells work best. Feel free to add the names of the oppressors to the spell.

The Reproductive Freedom Altar

I suggest an altar of reproductive freedom featuring images of these four goddesses, menstrual blood and/or vaginal fluid, red/pink candles. Botanicals associated with reproductive freedom such as blue cohosh, pennyroyal, mugwort and valerian can be burned or placed on the altar. Summon their spirits at the beginning of the spell, mixing their power into the petition to the goddesses. Mark yourself with the residual ash to fully invoke your own power of reproductive freedom.

Once your altar is created and the plant spirits released (if you are using them), light your candles and recite the following petition.

You can continue to charge this spell by relighting your candle daily.

Leave offerings of the botanicals, pomegranates, garlic and roses or those of your choosing to the goddesses as you evoke them.

If you have a specific intention, write it in red ink and recite it within this petition.

Remember that these goddesses can’t do for us what they can’t do through us. Speak out if you can and support those who do. Donate to organizations like the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. Together, we can win this war.

I’m sharing this spell in the plural and ask that you recite it as such. This summons and binds the energy of all of us doing this spell or similar ones in solidarity.

Images of those attacking us and all women can be bound with red string and then burned.

I printed the petition and then attached it to this devotional candle. I’m lighting it every day around moonrise. I’ve hung my kroki – the sacred cords of Hekatean Witchcraft – around it to activate my power to bring about change.

Petition

Hail Asteria!

Hail Leto!

Hail Artemis!

Hail Hekate!

Mistresses attend us now!

Mighty Asteria,

Queen of the Stars, descended to earth as divine deliver, she who knew the pain of rape.

Strongest Leto,

Exiled and reviled, she who knew the desperation of being denied help while pregnant, and the pain of rape.

Fierce Artemis,

Huntress seeking justice, Letos’ daughter who delivered her own brother.

Terrifying Hekate,

Goddess of the unwanted women who died for their sexuality,

Blood drinking vengeful Soteira of the marginalized.

To the Spirits of the Horde,

The wronged women who died at the hands of men for claiming power over their bodies and lives.

Hear us now!

Goddesses of birth, choice and power.

Divine midwives who reign over women’s reproduction.

We evoke you in the name of women whose right to be sovereign in their own bodies is threatened by the weakness of men.

We call upon you now to strengthen our fight against these tyrants and their compatriots.

Descend into us, filling us with your fury and power.

We claim the victory over these foulest of men in your names.

Embolden us, guide us, and liberate women everywhere.

Forever protect women’s freedom.

Join us together into a mighty horde.

Bind these men unto themselves, filling them with their own hatred,

Rendering the effects of their harm only unto themselves.

No more shall their work defile women.

As we speak it, it is so.

Hail Asteria!

Hail Leto!

Hail Artemis!

Hail Hekate!

Here’s the collage for you to use in your own spell. The collage is fully activated with the energies of the pharmakeia of reproductive freedom and the four goddesses evoked. Feel free to save, download, print and add your own spell to it. Use it as your altar, focusing your intentions on this charged image.

NOTE: I am a cis-woman who tries my best to be inclusive. Words have power as all witches know, so I try to choose ones that both reflect my perspective and honor other’s rights of self-identification. By using “woman,” I am not in any way dismissing anyone else’s identity. I am using “women” to describe anyone who has what is typically referred to as female reproductive organs and may or not identify as a woman (such as being a transman with ovaries), and to those who may not have such but identify as a woman (such as the gender fluid or transwomen). Reproductive freedom extends far beyond the ability to make choices regarding the contents of our uterus. I welcome comments from anyone who wishes to discuss gender self-identification, including advice on how I can better a better ally.

Also, I have not targeted individuals in this spell because they are only the symptom of the problem. While it is helpful to bind such people, it is more strategic to focus on becoming the agents of change for the world so that the underlying problem (the patriarchy) is dismantled. You do you – whether it’s how you define yourself or cast your spells. These thoughts are mine and not an infringement on your opinions.

I’ve been reading your posts for a while and I love your firm committment to social justice but I am shaking at your repeated use of the transphobic term “women” which does violence to transgender men who are able to become pregnant. Please use the inclusive term “uterus havers” instead. Thanks for everything you do.

  • Jill Tyner

I have forwarded this to many a witch. I also included males that I trust as well as my sisters. Many of these have connections that will continue it out to the world. Blessings to you L. Cyndi.

  • Thanks so much, Jill.

  • Thank you for your comment. I have added a note explaining who I included in the use of the word “women,” which I shall continue to use. My spell is not limited to those who have a uterus. Reproductive freedom extends far beyond being able to self-determine pregnancy.

  • Brianne Raven Wolf

I loved your spell Cyndi! And yes, reproductive freedom does extend far beyond self-determining pregnancy. I know transmen who have conceived, and tranwomen who have had their sperm fertilize cis-women too!

  • Shoshanna Cohen

Thank you for using the term “reproductive freedom” rather than ‘women’s rights’. By doing this you include people who must be centered: non-binary, gender fluid, and gender nonconforming people as well as transwomen who have male bodies.
Finally. as a person who was assigned male at birth, my gender identity and my biological sex is now female, therefore the abortion issue affects me deeply.

  • KermodeBear

As Pagans, are we not supposed to hold life as sacred?

  • nipha northern

Hekate would spit in your face for denying the spiritual duality of gender

  • nipha northern

100%… dont forget the real hekate, not the subconscious construct this mentally ill social marxist writes about, HATES child killers with a passion. This is well attested in ancient sources. She is a protector of children, not a supporter of infanticide.

  • It’s so wonderful that you can speak on Hekate’s behalf.

  • Dear Nipha,
You are undoubtedly some sort of lonely troll, who most likely doesn’t even believe the statement you wrote. Just trying to get yourself some attention. Now, I’ve gave you some. Hope you feel better.

  • Cynthia Thorstad

Thank you for this post Cyndi. I will work this spell during Litha at its peak.
