There were three holy places in Jerusalem: The one open to the west called “the Holy,” another opened to the south called the “Holy of the Holy,” and a third open to the east called the “Holy of Holies,” where only the priest alone could enter.

Immersion in light and water is the Holy. To be free is the Holy of the Holy. The Holy of Holies is the bridal chamber of communion.

Trust and consciousness in the embrace are exalted over all. Those who pray to Jerusalem are found only in the Holy of Holies…the bridal chamber.

What is the bridal chamber if not the place of trust and consciousness in the embrace? It is an icon of Union beyond all forms of possession. Here is where the veil is torn from top to bottom. Here is where we arise and awaken. (The Gospel of Philip, vs. 76)

In this verse, Philip’s Gospel continues to unpack this notion of the Bridal Chamber as a metaphor for the union of Humanity and Divinity by using the analogy of the Temple in Jerusalem: “There were three holy places in Jerusalem.”

These three holy places were symbolic. They pointed to the reality of our Oneness with the Divine as experienced in Immersion (Baptism), Atonement (Awakening), and Communion (Consummation).

Those who are truly devoted to God are not the ones who continue to pray and bow down to the empty symbols. Instead, the truly enlightened ones are those who are found in the Bridal Chamber with the Bridegroom, where the veil is torn and where they can see the Holy One face to face rather than through a glass, darkly.

When we mistake the metaphor for the reality, we miss everything. The map is not the treasure. The menu is not the meal.

We need to learn to see truth and meaning in symbols without being distracted by the metaphor.

When we do that, the reality comes into focus and the symbols fade away.
