Day Makes his Day in Charlotte

Day Makes his Day in Charlotte 2018-05-06T17:02:44-07:00

Just minutes ago, PGA Tour golfing star Jason Day continued his effort to regain his #1 status in World Rankings by winning the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. He finished two strokes ahead of second-place finishers Aaron Wise and Nick Watney. It was Day’s second PGA Tour win this year.

Jason Day started today’s play with a two-shot lead over the field. But uncharacteristically of him, the handsome and fit Australian with the flawless golf swing hit the ball so poorly today from tee-to-green for him that it was his A-game with the short sticks that saved the day plus a strong finish.

He was tied for the lead with winless Aaron Wise after 15 holes. Then Jason birdied the 16th and 17th holes and got it up-and-down from right of the green for a par on the long and difficult par-four 18th. On the 230-yard par 3 17th, his long iron shot off the tee hit the flagstick. He finished the tournament with a 12-under par total of 272.

This major tournament winner said in the televised interview right after today’s play, “One of the best wins I have ever had.” He said that because, at the end of such a struggle with his game, he still lifted the trophy. That is the sign of a really great player.

Crowd favorite but aging superstar Phil Mickelson continued his reemergence this year by blistering the course with a 64 yesterday to finish in fifth place today.

They were playing this tournament at Qual Hollow way back in my day. It was one of my favorite tournaments and golf courses, plus, you can’t beat that Southern hospitality, especially in the Carolinas and Georgia. People there are so friendly.

Next week is the Players Championship at Sawgrass in Florida. The PGA Tour pros call it “the fifth major” of the year’s schedule. It is arguably the strongest field of the year.
