When U.S. President Donald Trump delivered the graduation commencement speech at Liberty University last year, the school gave him an honorary doctorate of laws degree. Honorary degrees are controversial since they are not earned degrees (I was given one at North Park University, located in Chicago, in 2000). But in this case, it looks pretty suspicious and thus more controversial. Plus, Liberty University is the largest Christian university in the U.S., and it was founded by the Reverend Jerry Falwell of Moral Majority fame. So, this raises questions about what is lawful and what is moral.
Every since Trump has been president, he has been trying to shut down the special counsel investigation headed by former FBI director Robert Mueller, which in under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice. Mueller’s investigation is about whether or not the Trump presidential campaign committed conspiracy with Russian operatives in order to get Trump elected.
So, it does not seem that a man should be given an honorary doctorate of laws if he is trying to stop the Justice Department from making sure our nation’s laws are obeyed.
