Yesterday was very historic for the United States of America. President Donald Trump gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, and hours later, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi officially announced that six committees of the House were beginning impeachment proceedings against President Trump.
Populist Trump’s UN speech was contrary to the very purpose of the United Nations. He gave an “America First” speech rather than a speech of unification of America with other nations. He discredited China. He threatened Iran. He spoke of “Iran’s bloodlust.”
Trump, reading from a prepared text, said, “The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots.” Trump is now going to be severely tested about his patriotism, or lack thereof, to the USA as the impeachment investigation goes forward in Congress in the upcoming months.
Trump also said in his UN speech, “If you want peace, love your nation.” That reflects upon Trump belief in, to put it bluntly, selfishness. His narcissistic disorder makes him so self-centered, so ego-centric. And he is perpetrating that onto the American people.
Jesus was asked, “‘Which commandment is first of all?’ Jesus answered, ‘The first is, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these'” (Mark 12.28-31 NRSV). Jesus was not original in saying this. He was quoting from Torah (Deuteronomy 6.4-5; Leviticus 19.18).
I believe nations should do likewise. That is, a nation should love God and love their neighboring nations as themselves. That is what would bring peace to this world, not what Donald Trump said yesterday to the world in the forum of the United Nations–“If you want peace, love your nation.”
