Well, it’s to be expected–Donald Trump came out today advising pro golfers that have the opportunity of playing on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series to take the money and thereby dish the PGA Tour. He had posted on his Truth Social media site on June 23, “So INTERESTING to see the PGA Tour finally start to treat its players fairly now that the LIV Tour has opened to such a big BANG.”
Now, he’s at it again. He wrote today, “All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing but a big ‘thank you’ from PGA officials who are making Millions of Dollars a year. If you don’t take the money now, you will get nothing after the merger takes place, and only say how smart the original signees were.”
Trump had been angry at the PGA Tour ever since they dumped their tournament at his golf club in Miami, about three years ago. I think that move was sort of obviously done to disassociate from toxic Donald Trump and his brand. To keep the tournament there at Doral, where it had been for about sixty years, would have hurt the PGA Tour with its commercial sponsors and maybe even the television networks. Doral was one of my favorite venues on the Tour and the place where I almost won my first Tour tournament, in 1966, when I lost by one stroke.
The next LIV Golf event is at the Trump National Golf Club at Bedminster, New Jersey. The last, and eighth, LIV Golf event this year is to be staged at Trump National Doral Miami in Miami, Florida.
