Scottie Scheffler—the #1 pro golfer in Official World Golf Ranking for the past 82 consecutive weeks (he has been #1 for a total of 117 weeks)—has this evening been awarded Player of the Year by the PGA Tour. Only Tour players vote for this award, and 91% of them voted for Scheffler.

Scottie solidified this position two days ago by winning the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas for his ninth win in this 2024 calendar year. That tied the most wins ever in a calendar year on the PGA Tour, tied with Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh who each did it once.

Scheffler Is on the Roll

However, this Bahamas tournament, hosted by Tiger Woods, was not an official PGA Tour tournament. And it had a limited field of 20 players, though they are top stars in pro golf. Plus, Scottie won a total of seven official PGA Tour events in the Tour’s 2024 schedule, which ended in early Fall.

Counting the PGA Tour’s FedEx bonus, Scheffler won an unprecedented, whopping, $62 million in prize money this year. Scottie was asked in a presser after the Bahamas win about all that loot. He said, “As far as I’m concerned, I don’t play golf for money. I’ve been playing golf my whole life for free and the money’s just a bonus. If somebody wants to pay us to come out here and play golf, that’s great, I’m not going to say no to it. I’m going to do the best I can in my community to steward that money well.”

Tiger and Charlie to Play in PNC Championship

Also today, Tiger Woods announced that he will compete this month in the PNC Championship, a two-person team event, with his son, 15-year old Charlie. They were runner-up in it two years ago. Plus, Charlie’s high school golf team recently placed second for all schools in Florida. Yet, Tiger had another back operation not long ago, so he’s been recovering from it and was not expected to play this event.

The PGA Tour Bible Study

Scottie Scheffler is a regular member of the PGA Tour Bible Study who often speaks publicly about his Christian faith and what it means to him and his family. Next year, in August, will be the 60th anniversary of this Christian fellowship on the PGA Tour, which I co-founded and then co-led for 18 years. In fact, I have written a book about it and have submitted it to a prominent U.S. publisher of Christian books.
