First-time, official talks about the war in Ukraine began yesterday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between the U.S. and Russia, with Ukraine being excluded. The U.S. is involved because it has furnished the most military support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion and attack against its country three years ago. To set the tone, U.S. President Donald Trump, who is not attending the discussions, made disparaging and false remarks about Ukraine and its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
U.S. President Donald Trump made the most outrageous lie yesterday, alleging that Ukraine “started” this war. In fact, in 2014 Russia’s President Vladimir Putin sent his troops into Ukraine and stole its Crimean Peninsula, which its has occupied ever since. So, Putin’s decision to attack eastern Ukraine three years ago was more of the same against Ukraine since Crimea in 2014.
Who Is the “Dictator:” Zelenskyy or Trump?
Trump said yesterday that the courageous Zelenskyy was a “dictator without elections.” Yet Ukraine’s constitution says it must not have elections during wartime. In truth, it is now President Donald Trump who is trying to be a dictator of the USA after he may have committed insurrection on January 6th, 2020. That day he tried to stop the legitimate transfer of presidential power after losing the previous presidential election fair and square by sending his MAGA crowd to attack the U.S. Capitol.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social yesterday, “Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start.” This is baloney! The U.S. has spent just over $100 billion in support of Ukraine in this war. And Ukraine didn’t start the war—Putin’s Russian troops invaded and have destroyed much of eastern Ukraine. And Zelenskyy was a professional comedian before he became Ukraine’s president.
Zelenskyy Reminds Me of Israel’s King David
Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a Jew, the first Jewish president of Ukraine. Because of his courage, he reminds me of ancient Israel’s King David. Both were from modest backgrounds and arose to the occasion when an aggressor threatened their country. In the case of David, he was a young shepherd who met the challenge of the giant Philistine named Goliath by accepting the challenge to fight him. David slung a stone that embedded in Goliath’s forehead, knocking him to the ground. David then killed the giant Goliath—who stood nine feet, six inches tall—cutting off his head with Goliath’s own sword (1 Samuel 17).
Zelenskyy has demonstrated unusual bravery as Ukraine’s president, receiving awards for it. Soon after he had surprisingly won the presidential election in his country of Ukraine, its big, giant, neighboring Russia invaded Ukraine. It now remains to be seen if this war will end, beginning with these talks in Saudi Arabia, or not. It is not looking promising after President Trump’s false statements about it yesterday.
