Scottie Scheffler won his 6th tournament today on the PGA Tour this year at the Procore Championship at Silverado Resort and Spa in the picturesque wine country of Napa, California. He shot a five-under par 67 for a 19-par total of 269 to defeat Ben Griffin by one stroke. Both players admittedly competed in this end-of-year event as a tuneup for the upcoming Ryder Cup in two weeks.
Griffin Misses Four Footer for Scheffler to Win
Griffin led most of the day. But Scheffler came from behind to make it a close match between the two of them in the final holes. With Scheffler in the clubhouse with a one stroke lead, and Griffin playing in the last group, Ben hit a fine metalwood shot on the back right of the green for his second shot on the par-five 18th hole.
So, it looked like Griffin would two-putt for a birdie to force a sudden-death playoff. But his first putt from about 45 feet was only mediocre, leaving him a four-foot putt for his birdie. He surprising missed it, barely touching the left edge of the cup, to give him a three-putt par five. That left Scheffler standing again with another trophy to add to his collection for the year. At less than thirty years of age, he has won 19 PGA Tour tournaments.
Scheffler Is the #1 Pro Golfer in the World
So, in the past two-and-a-half-years, Scottie Scheffler has distanced himself from the rest of his peers in pro golf. During this time, he has won three majors and been the #1 pro in World Rankings. He even is being compared to Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
My New Book
As I have blogged many times, Scottie Scheffler is a prominent and regular member of the PGA Tour Bible Study that meets weekly on the Tour, which I cofounded and co-led. I now have a book about this growing Christian movement in professional golf entitled Christ on the PGA Tour (1965-1982). It was just published last week and is available at amazon.com. BTW, I won the first PGA Tour tournament on this golf course, in 1968. That’s (I don’t even want to admit it), fifty-seven years ago. It was my first PGA Tour win. Like Scottie today, I won by one stroke defeating Dave Marr, who later won a PGA Championship.
