F. F. Bruce (1910-1990) was Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester in England. He wrote numerous Bible commentaries. He had a sterling reputation as an astute scholar who could explain things for the common person to understand. He had an early background with the Plymouth Brethren. So, Bruce always affirmed the orthodox teaching of Trinitarianism–God is three Persons (Father, Son Jesus, and Holy Spirit)–so that Jesus was both God and man. Readers of my literary works know that I was a Trinitarian for 22 years and then read myself out of it in the Bible. I then wrote about my scriptural findings in my book The Restitution of Jesus Christ.
Bruce wrote a journal article published in 1975 in Journal of the Christian Brethren Research Fellowship entitled “The Humanity of Jesus Christ” (pp. 5-15). It begins, “If Godhead is to be revealed in the created order, it will be revealed most adequately in manhood, since man was created in the image of God.” This is a primary argument that I make in my book. The statement I often make about this is as follows: “God is a single person because man is a single person, since man was made in the image of God.” So, I am surprised that F. F. Bruce can say such a thing since it supports the view that God is a single person, being “the Father” as Jesus called him, whereas it does not support that God is a Godhead consisting of three persons, as Bruce thought.
