Huckabee Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez Duke It Out on Global Warming

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the new U.S. House of Representatives politician who is taking the U.S. political scene by storm. At twenty-nine years of age, she is also the youngest member of Congress ever.

As a Democrat, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is advocating some socialistic ideas. She wants the highest individual tax bracket raised to 70%, so that those who make over $10 million in a year would pay 70% in federal taxes.

Ocasio-Cortez also has proposed what she calls the Green New Deal. As a take off from President Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s that helped the U.S. overcome the terrible Depression, Green New Deal is mostly about instituting programs to overcome global warming–negative climate change our world is suffering. I agree wholeheartedly with her about this. Ever since the oil embargo of 1973, I’ve been a strong advocate for the U.S. to become energy self-sufficient and drastically reduce carbon emissions that are the main culprit causing global warming.

Tuesday night, on Sean Hannity’s Fox News TV program, the White House administration’s press spokesperson Sandra Huckabee Sanders–like a true Trumpite who denies global warming–said concerning Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, “I don’t think that we are going to listen to her on much of anything, particularly anything that we will leave into the hands of a much, much high authority.” She explained that we should leave the planet in “the hands of something and someone much more powerful than any of us.” In both statements, she obviously referred to God. In case you don’t know, her dad, Mike Huckabee, was a Baptist church pastor, then governor of Arkansas, ran for president in 2016, and now is a political commentator on Fox News.

What! Sarah Huckabee says, “I don’t think that we are going to listen to her,” referring to Ms. Cortez, “on much of anything”? That’s what Sarah should be saying about herself! I think two years as President Trump’s spokesperson, backing up or explaining his many lies, has ruined her reputation.

Mrs. Sanders saying we should leave global warming to God is about like saying we should let God take care of all the other human ruinations of our planet, such as cleaning up the many hazardous waste sites or taking care of the endangered animal species that humans have caused.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez was raised Catholic. So, she tweeted in response to Mrs. Sanders, “Genesis 1: God looked on the world and called it good not once, not twice, but seven times. Genesis 2: God commands all people to ‘serve and protect’ creation. Leviticus: God mandates that not only the people, but the land that sustains them shall be respected. You shouldn’t need a Bible to tell you to protect our planet, but it does anyway.”

Indeed, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez could have added to that a really powerful quotation from the Bible’s last book–Revelation. It pronounces judgment on people who destroy this planet. It quotes some angels in heaven–at the time of the end of the age on earth, when Jesus will return. They sing to God, saying, “We give you thanks, Lord God Almighty, who are and who were, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. The nations raged, but your wrath has come, and the time for judging the dead, for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints and all who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying those who destroy the earth” (Rev 11.17-18 NRSV). What does that last clause say about Mrs. Sanders remark?
