Read more

As my deadline to submit this article approaches, the official results of the presidential election have not yet been finalized.  For forty-eight hours I have felt impatient with a desire for things to unravel to their end whatever that may be, and a quick scroll through social media shows that I am not alone.  Patience is a virtue difficult to exercise, especially in modernity when we have grown used to immediate responses and results.  The word patience comes from the... Read more

November 10, 2020 The report on ex-Cardinal and ex-Priest Theodore McCarrick was released this morning by the Holy See. While it will take time to read it with appropriate thoroughness, please know that I am praying for his victims and for all of those who have been hurt by the Church and her ministers through action or inaction. This report represents a darkness in the history of the Church, and is a reminder to those of us charged with shepherding the flock... Read more

Father Ubald survived the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. He played an instrumental role in the healing process of the country once the genocide ended. He was led by the Holy Spirit to pray with people and to bless them with Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.  He began to see Jesus work miracles in his midst. For the past few years, he has led The Secret of Peace, a retreat center in southwestern Rwanda where the faithful gather to pray... Read more

Archbishop Viganò, former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, has written a new letter addressed to “American Catholics and to all Americans of good will.”  It was published by The Remnant Newspaper on November 4, 2020. I have commented on Viganò’s letters before, and even speculated that these letters may be written by someone else who is deeply invested in U.S. politics.  I understand that the Archbishop speaks English very well, and has always had a keen interest in U.S. politics. ... Read more

Read more

It seems as if March 2020 was a very long time ago.  The streets of downtown Savannah were empty.  There were no tourists, no pedestrians, and every parking spot was available.  Most businesses were closed except the pharmacy and a few coffee shops.  On March 27th, Pope Francis entered an empty and darkening Saint Peter Square for a special prayer service and blessing – one that captivated and consoled millions of souls worldwide. He opened his message stating, “a thick... Read more

I recently read a Catholic parish bulletin from the Diocese of Charlotte where the Pastor included the 2002 A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters written by Fr. Stephen Torraco which was widely circulated before the 2004 election.  I found the same guide published on the EWTN website. Father Torraco uses a simple question and answer format to raise various issues.  Among his statements he writes, “If a political candidate supported abortion, or any other moral evil, such as assisted suicide... Read more

As we prepare for Election Day 2020, it is of critical importance that we make decisions based upon an informed conscience and our own personal prayer and reflection. I encourage you to fully participate in the election process but also to be aware of the critical issues of our times. Every vote is important and the decisions that we make today affect not only ourselves but future generations. …en español abajo… As a Church we do not endorse candidates and... Read more

On October 1963 during the Second Vatican Council after a heated debate whether the treatise on the Virgin Mary should be kept separate or be incorporated into the document on the Church Lumen Gentium, the New York Times ran the headline, “Council Votes to Downgrade Mary.”  This headline gave an impression incongruent with what actually happened at the Council, and in particular at that specific debate.  The role of the Virgin Mary was not downgraded, but rather the document that... Read more
