Lifted and pierced

Lifted and pierced March 12, 2011

Revelation 1:7 quotes and/or alludes to Daniel 7 and Zechariah 12. The usual interpretive procedure is to move from Daniel and Zechariah, through Matthew 24:30, which quotes both passages, and on to Revelation. Many commentators note in passage that John 19:37 also quotes the same piercing passage from Zechariah 12, but not much is made of it.

I suspect that the genealogy should pass through John. Though John does not quote Daniel 7 in John 19, the whole scene is Daniel 7ish, at least as John understands it. John consistently links the glorification and exaltation of the Son of Man not with the ascension but with the cross, which he sees as the beginning of Jesus’ ascent (3:13-14; 6:62; 8:28; 12:23, 34; 13:31). In short, John as much as Matthew combines Daniel 7 with Zechariah 12, but sees them both focused on the cross.

This makes a lot of sense of Revelation 1:7. The tribes of the earth could see the Son of Man coming on clouds when He was lifted up from the earth; that same moment, they saw the Pierced One. More directly in Revelation, the tribes of the earth see the Son of Man/Pierced One when they see the saints lifted up with their Master by sharing in His sufferings.
