A happy 5th of July to all of you and a special thanks to my good friend John Clem, the Director and Media Minister at Catholic Web Services (http://catholicws.com/) who has complied the follow list of “not to be missed” stories from this past week (June 29th to July 5th): Papal Tweet: “Jesus is more than a friend. He is a teacher of truth and life who shows us the way that leads to happiness.” (Pope Francis) Relics of St Therese of Lisieux... Read more

I awoke this morning to the release of Pope Francis’ first encyclical, Lumen Fidei (Light of Faith). While I’m not awake yet to have read the document in full (or truthfully even in part), you can find the full encyclical on the Vatican’s website in PDF or e-reader. I will read it over the weekend and blog about what I learned – I hope you’ll take time with it too. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Read more

I may end up sleeping with all the lights on for the next few nights due to my viewing this afternoon of the pretty amazing zombie flick World War Z. Rated PG13 and with an AIII rating from the USCCB, this film mainly stars Brad Pitt and a bunch of (actually not too gruesome as zombies go) zombies. Here’s the official trailer: I don’t in any way want to give the ending away so I’ll simply tell you that the... Read more

One of my first stops each morning is to pay a quick visit to my favorite social media site: Twitter. Typically, my overnight haul of tweets that I’ve missed includes a gem from @Pontifex (who likes to tweet around 2:45 am my time) and messages from my friends living in other parts of the world. This morning, I awoke to this little exchange: @Soulessniper (aka “Frankly Atheist”) was responding to my first tweet of the day — an automated one — which... Read more

Rocca discussing the authorship of Lumen Fidei – “The Light of Faith” – which will be released on Friday. I have to say that I can’t think of a more perfect title and cover than the one unveiled today by my friend Fr. Roderick Vonhögen of SQPN. Geekpriest: Confessions of a New Media Pioneer launches in September, but I already had a sneak peek at the manuscript and I can tell you it’s a winner. I spent the weekend channeling my inner Father Roderick. As I read this page turner, I couldn’t help but hear my friend’s weird Dutch-accent-laden... Read more

As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”  Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” And to another he said, “Follow me.”  But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”  But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead.  But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” ... Read more

You’ve probably seen it, but perhaps you didn’t even know what it was called: the “pallium”. Per Catholic Encyclopedia, a definition: The modern pallium is a circular band about two inches wide, worn about the neck, breast, and shoulders, and having two pendants, one hanging down in front and one behind. The pendants are about two inches wide and twelve inches long, and are weighted with small pieces of lead covered with black silk. The remainder of the pallium is... Read more

I have so many amazing online friends who inspire and edify me each week to be a better, more tuned in and faith-filled Catholics. One of those friends is John Clem, the Director and Media Minister at Catholic Web Services (http://catholicws.com/). John has been doing a weekly roundup of the best faith-related tweets of the week, and has kindly offered to share this with our family here at Patheos Catholic Channel. I’ve taken him up on the offer and hope to... Read more

I’d like to weigh in on the big news of today in my own way, since I lack the insight, eloquence and also the guts of some of my fellow Patheos bloggers. There are so many educated insights floating around, so rather than blogging today I spent my day praying about what — if anything — I should write about on a day when major legal news was made in the arena of the definition of marriage. For a full... Read more
