Thanks for enduring a few days of “radio silence” here on the blog folks. Hopefully it prepared you for the onslaught of sharing that’s about to happen over the next few days. I always have the best of intentions for blogging when I’m on the road, so in some “alternate reality” I imagined myself working twelve hour days sharing this week’s USCCB meeting with you live via Twitter and then retiring to my hotel room to offer “real” posts in... Read more

Friends, sorry for the “radio silence” here for the past few days. I am in Baltimore attending the Fall General Assembly of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. During the daytime, I’m focusing my efforts on “live tweeting” the events, so here are some hashtags and twitter links if you’d like to follow along: lisahendey Twitter feed #USCCB12 – main hashtag for the General Assembly #bpsblog – yesterday’s “Bishops & Bloggers” hashtag Streaming video and texts of addresses I’ll... Read more

I know, you see this headline and you think, “Advent already?! Seriously, it’s only November 8th. Advent doesn’t even start until… wait, when does it start this year? Well, that doesn’t matter! It’s not for several weeks…” Guess what, Advent starts on December 2 this year. Depending on how you count the days, that’s 24 days from now (I’m being generous in my counting here…) It’s just around the corner! And this year, the Year of Faith, is the perfect... Read more

Today is an interesting day across my social media venues. I see many rejoicing as President Obama has been re-elected to lead our country for another four years. I see many asking — in sadness, in confusion, and often in anger — what this means for the causes many of us hold dear: the sanctity of all human life, care for all of those in need, and religious liberty. I’m not a pundit, so it’s not my way to answer... Read more

I am an extremely proud mom this morning. Actually, I’m typically a proud mom, but today the feeling is fresh and shiny. Here you see a photo of my son Adam, after voting for the very first time. We woke early so that we could go together before school. I’ll admit to being at times overly emotional — today, I caught myself with a boulder-sized lump in my throat as my eighteen year old walked up to the polling personnel, stated... Read more

This article headline over at Mashable today caught my eye: New Jersey Governor Tweets at Justin Bieber for Help With Sandy Relief The article goes on to detail New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s recent Twitter efforts to raise needed support for those suffering the aftereffects of Hurricane Sandy’s rage. I credit the Governor (or whatever staff member handles his Twitter duties) for recognizing the power of the Biebs. In Twitter land, the key to getting your message out to a... Read more

On Sunday November 4, 2012, one week after Pope Benedict XVI’s canonization of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha at the Vatican, families from across California’s Central Valley came together in St. John’s Cathedral to celebrate. Bishop Armando Ochoa of the Diocese of Fresno presided over the mass in honor of the very first Catholic Native American saint. Greg and Christine Williams of the Diocese of Fresno’s Native American Catholic Ministry organized the Mass of Celebration. Greg and Christine, were among the 700... Read more

Kudos to our friends from CatholicTV and Magnificat Magazine for today’s live event at the Crystal (and soon to be Christ) Cathedral. Fr. Robert Reed is warming up the crowd at the moment and you can be present there too because the event is being live streamed. I have shared a YouTube viewing window below (simply click the “play” arrow), but you can also watch at these links: Magnificat Day of Faith Website Youtube CatholicTV Twitter feeds to follow for... Read more

As we close out All Souls Day, I realize I’ve been remiss in something I’d been planning to do here on the blog. Today saw Pope Benedict XVI pausing for quiet prayer in the Crypt beneath St. Peter’s Basilica to remember the souls of the faithfully departed pontiffs who have gone before him. Seeing the photo of him that was shared today on the News.va website reminded me of my own amazing time spent praying in that very place just... Read more

Out here in California, I look out my office window and see a serene street and the grey low 60’s weather that reigns here in the Central Valley at this time of the year. My morning has been relatively quiet and the only sound I hear outside is the buzz of a nearby lawnmower. Suburbia… silence… stillness. When I tune into Twitter, that silence erupts as I try to compute mentally the suffering that I see erupting in 140 characters... Read more
