There is awesome power in prayer – there really is. Many people don’t realize how much our prayers move the heart of God. James 5:16 tells us that “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Today we will look at prayer and how we can pray to God with intensity and sincerity.

God Hears Our Prayers
In James 5:16 written above, we see that James uses the term “effectual fervent.” The original Greek insinuates that this type of prayer is one that “puts forth power” (Blue Letter Bible). Our prayers are powerful and when we pray, God hears. He is always listening.
Psalm 139:4 says, “For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” Also, 1 Peter 3:12 tells us, “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers.” We can be certain that God hears our prayers.
In fact, in 1 John 5:14-15 we read, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”
So, according to these scriptures we can come to the following conclusions:
- Our prayers are powerful
- God knows that we are praying
- God hears our prayers
- If we ask according to His will, He gives us what we ask for
I want to elaborate on the last point – God’s will is the most important thing here.
Why God’s Will Is So Important
Jeremiah 29:11-13 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”
Considering God’s will in your life is important because it is God who created you and He did so with a specific purpose and intricate plan in mind. When you realize that God made you for a reason, there is awesome power in prayers related to being in His will.
Often times, our prayers are focused on what WE want to do. Have you ever prayed that God’s will be done in your life? You see, God knows everything, so why try to take over the reins? Perhaps our plans are not what God has for us. Maybe that’s why some things never seem to go the way you want them to? Placing it all in God’s hands ultimately means that you will be led by the Holy Spirit to do what God created you to do.
When you are living in God’s will, the purpose for your life will be met with spiritual guidance and direction that leads to a deeper relationship with God. Through that deeper relationship you find peace and purpose and meaning, even in the middle of the challenges of life.

5 Powerful Prayers in the Bible
Let’s look at some powerful prayers in the Bible. You can use these prayers as models to pray for yourself, especially when you don’t know how to pray or what to pray for.
1. Hannah’s Prayer of Thanksgiving
Hannah’s prayer of thanksgiving revolves around gratitude and praise. She saw the faithfulness of God firsthand. Hannah’s joy is evident in her prayer and resonates with anyone seeking to find hope and victory in the midst of their circumstances. (1 Samuel 2:1-10)
2. Jabez’s Prayer for Blessing
Jabez prayed to God for blessing and for God to expand his territory. Jabez’s plea demonstrates the power of seeking God’s favor and the realization that our prayers can move God’s heart in order to shape the course of our lives. (1 Chronicles 4:10)
3. Paul’s Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom
The Apostle Paul interceded in prayer for the Church at Ephesus. His powerful prayer is a great example of how to pray when you are seeking a deeper spiritual knowledge of God and His will and purpose for your life. (Ephesians 1:17-19)
4. Jesus’ Prayer in Gethsemane
In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus revealed His humanity. He spoke a short but profound prayer that gives us a glimpse of His vulnerability, while at the same time, His surrender to the will of God. If you are faced with the unknown or caught in the middle of the storms of life, never forget the strength Jesus had to pray this prayer when faced with His imminent crucifixion. This prayer underscores the strength found in surrendering to God’s will. (Matthew 26:39)
5. The Lord’s Prayer
Jesus spoke the Lord’s Prayer during His Sermon on the Mount. The Lord’s Prayer serves as a model of prayer for all believers. This prayer starts and ends with praising the Lord and follows a step-by-step outline that is easy to remember if you use 6 P’s:
- Praise (Hallowed be your name)
- Proclamation (God’s will be done)
- Petition (Give us our daily bread)
- Pardon (Forgive us our debts)
- Protection (Lead us not into temptation)
- Praise (Acknowledging the power and glory of God)
The Lord’s Prayer is complete and covers everything we need to cover as we approach God in prayer. (Matthew 6:9-13)

There is Awesome Power in Prayer

The power of prayer cannot be overstated. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Paul tells us to “Pray without ceasing.” This is a simple but very powerful command. If you are sad, pray. If you are hurt, pray. If you are facing challenges, pray. If everything is right on track, pray. Even if you feel you cannot pray, pray anyway. Pray without ceasing.
Always have a heart whose inclination is to pray, to pray often, and to make prayer a high priority in your life. You never know when or how God is going to answer your prayers.

How to Practice “Praying without Ceasing”
If you are unsure of how to pray without ceasing, here are some basic instructions that you can follow:
- Pray often: Pray frequently and repeatedly.
- Don’t give up: Just keep praying. Don’t give up. God’s timing is perfect.
- Turn thoughts into prayers: When you feel anxious, fearful, or discouraged turn those thoughts into prayers. Thank God and praise Him for listening.
- Be Conscious of God in your life: Be aware that God is with you, He’s in control and involved in your life.
- Pray in every moment: Your first response to everything – fearful situations, anxious thoughts, questionable circumstances or positive outcomes – should be to pray.
- Pray while you wait: Pray for God to see you through waiting periods. Intercede on behalf of others, pray to accomplish tasks at hand, and ask God for strength and patience as you wait.
- Give thanks and count your blessings: Thank God for everything – a safe trip to work, a chance encounter with an old friend, keeping you from harm, having a family to share your life with. A heart of gratitude pleases the Lord. Thank Him for all He’s blessed you with.

Final Thoughts
God is always listening, that is why prayer is always the answer. Our prayers hold power that we cannot fully comprehend. If you have not placed prayer at the top of your daily priority list, please do so. As your prayer life increases, watch the Lord move in your life and the lives of those you pray for.
Through prayer, God opens doors (and even closes doors) and leads you to opportunities you didn’t even know existed. Never forget that God is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). Prayer is an act of faith that grows the more we pray. Not only that, but our relationship with God grows so much more when we pray. There is the awesome power in prayer.
