You are less prone to adultery if your spouse is your standard,
Adultery is something we commit with our hands, but it also includes what we desire in our heart after gazing with our eyes. We do this by committing what Jesus called “adultery of the heart” in Matthew 5:28.
God’s answer for coveting with our eyes is to make a covenant with our eyes. The example given in Job 31:1 is this: “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully…” To covenant with our eyes is an intentional and ongoing battle to keep our spouse as our standard of beauty, object of our affection, and deepest devotion.
Consider God’s intent for our first parents. God did not have them make a list of what they wanted in a spouse, post it online, and swipe through the photos and bios of a parade of people until they found the people they wanted to sleep and live with to see if one would work as a spouse. Instead, God brought two people together and had them enter into a covenant where they did not compare their spouse to a standard but instead considered their spouse their standard.
Are you holding your spouse to a standard? Or, is your spouse your standard?
