What Should Christians Think about Satan, Demons, and Zombies?

What Should Christians Think about Satan, Demons, and Zombies? 2017-12-05T14:55:09-05:00

What holiday has blood, spider webs, witches, demons, black cats, haunted houses, vampires, coffins, and zombies?

Halloween.

Halloween is a most peculiar holiday. When else do we decorate our homes with the specific intent of scaring young children? When else do parents encourage their children to go to the homes of total strangers, ask for candy, and eat it? When else do we dress up as zombies, witches, and vampires?

Halloween has become one of the biggest holidays in America as well as in numerous other nations around the world. Curiously, Halloween also pushes to the front of our cultural conversation some parts of the Bible that we might otherwise not think or talk much about.

Is there really an evil spiritual being named Satan at work in the world?

Are there really evil spiritual beings called demons who started as angels but joined Satan in their war against God and all that is good?

What is a zombie? Is it possible for an evil demon to inhabit a dead body and walk around kind of like a false resurrection?

Are these things real, or just myths like cartoon superheroes? Are these kinds of things an insight into the supernatural battle between God and Satan that is raging on the earth? Or, are concepts like Satan, demons, and zombies primitive myths from a bygone age when people were not well educated and lived in fear of powerful but false cultural myths about the spirit realm?

Have you ever really stopped to think about these things in much detail? If someone asked you these kinds of questions, what would your answer be? Do you know if the Bible says anything about these subjects?

These are the kinds of questions I get asked as a pastor, especially during the Halloween season. So, I pulled over in my Jeep to a cemetery, turned on my laptop, scratched out some thoughts, and recorded this short video about Satan, Demons, and Zombies in the Bible. Yes, it seems that each member of this troubling false trinity is in the Bible. I am hopeful that you’ll find the video answers helpful.

If you have any questions about God, the Bible, cultural issues, or a personal matter in your own life, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I take many of the questions that come in and answer them via video. I will not use your last name, but if your question is chosen, I will do my best to answer it in a way that is biblical and hopeful. The odds are that you’re not the only person asking that question, and your question could help a lot of other people.
