As many of you know, the lawsuit funded by my organization Citizens for Self-Governance was successful. In October, the federal government admitted they targeted these patriotic Americans and agreed to settle the class-action lawsuit in Ohio and a tea party challenge in the District of Columbia. If the court approves the class settlement, the government will have to fork over $3.5 million, including compensation to the tea party groups, merely the first step in showing the public how the IRS was turned into a political weapon against Americans. Thankfully, recordings and transcripts of the depositions of former IRS executive Lois G. Lerner could give the public a really great glimpse into their targeting.
However, Lerner and her former IRS deputy Holly Paz now say they’re scared of what may happen if the public finds out what they did. “The voluminous record of harassment and physical threats to Mss. Lerner and Paz and their families during the pendency of this litigation provides a compelling reason to seal the materials,” her attorney said. But Lerner and Paz pointed out one person in particular who has stoked the potential for violence against them.
I was recently on Fox News to discuss this lunacy.
“We have a right to know and we certainly ought to know,” I said. “The thing I find so outrageous is… we already know on the public record that she did these things. We just don’t know all the details. When the IRS targets the American people, they certainly have a right to know what their employees did.”
Also, I made this point. “The only way to prevent this from happening in the future, is to know what happened in the past.”
