College Satire Paper Features Jesus in a Sexually Suggestive Pose

College Satire Paper Features Jesus in a Sexually Suggestive Pose April 2, 2018

Just in time for Easter, the Montana State University student newspaper decided to go all out in sacrilege department.  A satirical edition of the MSU Exponent featured an article which discussed sexual acts being performed on Jesus Christ.  The piece, titled “The Highest form of Consent,” had an accompanying image that was suggestive, showing Jesus exposing Himself.

The piece includes this searing social commentary:

“After all, what could be sexier than spending a long day at work or in class, coming home, and getting on your knees opening your mouth for the Lord,” the unsigned column states. “Who do you think will protect you when you have sinful premarital relations? Because it sure as Hell not gonna be that condom you’ve been carrying in your wallet for four years on the off chance that you get luck. It’s gonna be that beautiful, sin-absolving love muscle.”

If this is what passes as satire at Montana State, I’d suggest parents think twice before sending their children there to get an English degree.  Under the provocative image of Jesus pulling up his garments, the caption says, “Jesus turns the other Jeek (Jesus cheek).”  Seriously, I have no words.

Bad student writing is nothing interesting.  But here’s the kicker: the student publication is funded by mandatory student fees.  In other words, all students who attend Montana State University have to support this sort of horrible portrayal of Christ.  Student don’t have a way to opt out of these fees, even if it violates their deeply held religious beliefs.  (Or, even if they have no religious beliefs but realize this article is just reeeeally dumb.)

Apparently, the editorial team did an about face after the piece caused outrage. Campus Reform has the details:

“The editorial team decided, after publication, that the article in question was not in keeping with our content standards for satire. Additionally, after considering the timing of publication with Holy Week, we decided that removing the article from our online presence was the responsible decision.

The MSU Exponent has been in print since 1895, sparing a few years during WWII. We have an extensive archive available for your perusal. You may access the archive via Montana State’s campus library. I honestly do not know if any religious figures/icons/deities/etc. have been satirized before in the Exponent.”

Wait, what?  Anyone else surprised to find out the paper actually has editorial standards?

Though it’s great that the editorial team came to their senses, this publication reveals the level of contempt this university has toward its Christian students. Can you imagine this editorial board “accidentally” publishing an article that depicts Mohammad in this way? Not a chance.

This university is fine with mocking their Christian students for a laugh.  Too bad they weren’t even clever enough to pull that off.
