From the official statement of the Department of Homeland “Security” about right-wing terrorists. You can find the un-classified “intelligence analysis” here:
Paralleling the current national climate, rightwing extremists during the 1990s exploited a variety of social issues and political themes to increase group visibility and recruit new members. Prominent among these themes were . . . . white supremacists’ longstanding exploitation of social issues such as abortion . . . and same-sex marriage. During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the number of domestic rightwing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks, and infrastructure sectors.
There is no danger, repeat, no danger from extremists like William Ayers, who planted and detonated bombs in the pursuit of “social justice,” and said he wouldn’t “discount the possibility” of planting and detonating more bombs. There is no danger, repeat, no danger, from such individuals, for if there were any danger, they would not be tenured academics and our Maximum Leader would not have gladly associated with them professionally and personally. No sir, considering the fact that Obama and Ayers share the same views on many issues to be in any way critical of the Son of God would be guilt by association, which is unAmerican. In contrast, opponents of abortion and same-sex marriage are actually in league with one another through a vast, right-wing conspiracy and deserve a colonoscopy from the FBI.[**]
DHS/I&A; assesses that lone wolves . . . embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States. Information from law enforcement and nongovernmental organizations indicates lone wolves . . . have shown intent-and, in some cases, the capability-to commit violent acts. . . . DHS[ ] has concluded that white supremacist lone wolves pose the most significant domestic terrorist threat because of their low profile and autonomy-separate fromany formalized group-which hampers warning efforts.
“Lone wolf” is a Klan phrase for members who commit terrorist acts which please the leadership while providing the group with plausible deniability. In other words, anyone who embraces the “white supremacist” causes of the so-called “right to life” and opposition to progressive constitutional doctrines regarding the right to marry might be a “Lone Wolf,” because the lack of proof that he or she has ever associated with any terrorist group just proves how good he or she is at providing plausible deniability. Especially if he or she owns a gun, because the report constantly mentions gun ownership as a sign of subversive intentions.
This exercise in fascist propaganda is merely another example of the paranoid style in American politics that produced, for example, COINTELPRO and the career of Joseph McCarthy. That does not make it any less outrageous and alarming. Obama has now attained the moral status of every president who condoned Hoover’s actions and remained silent about Tail-Gunner Joe. Yes we can! No change here.
[**] I thought that the “Weatherman Obama” controversy was only another example of the witless stunts to which the Republican Party has reduced itself. So long as Napolitano remains head of DHS and is not forced to publicly apologize for and withdraw this witless stunt of a report, however, President Obama can be legitimately regarded as a known associate of terrorists.
